Get the Look isn’t just about real homes; it can also be pure fantasy. This week, guest writer Gabriella Cetrulo curates a set of rooms inspired by the softest color palette.
As I recently watched one of my favorite childhood movies, Addams Family Values, I found myself laughing at the exact same moments I did when I was 9. I’m not really sure why, but I’ve always loved the scene where Morticia Addams (dressed in her usual all-black attire) confronts her nemesis in her pink mansion. She states that she can overlook all of her betrayals (including the destruction of her family), but the one thing she could not forgive is the pastel décor of her home.
“All of this I can forgive… but Debbie, pastels?”
Let’s face it: pastels have gotten a bad rep, particularly when it comes to home decor. Try getting your husband to agree to a pink living room and watch his face cringe in revulsion. To be honest, I have never been a fan of pastels myself; however, my opinion has started to shift. I’m beginning to think it’s more about the execution and style of an item than the color itself. When applied the right way, a pink or lilac room can look fun and modern. Rather than using shabby-chic items exclusively, perhaps include some unexpected and modern items. A color scheme that’s often thought of as dated can take on an entirely new vibe.

Despite pastels bad rap, I currently see pastels being reappropriated through 80's vintage items. I'm thinking of when the 80's did the 50's maybe? Still, mint green has always been fabulous! Excellent article and collections.

As a little girl I remember hanging out in my Nana's bedroom, it was a ultimate in femininity, purple pastel walls, white lamps with gems strewn from them, a make up table topped with beautiful colourful glass bottles and brushes of silver on lovely little mirrored trays. I adored that room, it was a sanctuary from the reigning male dominated culture of that day. My Mother went on to paint the powder room in our house a lovely pastel purple and I will let you know that most every woman who entered it, descended in envy of that pastel purple powder room. "oh, Sharon what a lovely bathroom you have, I never would have thought to use a soft shade of pastel purple" A wonderful article, with the proper balance pastels can be apart of anyones sanctuary! Thanks for the memories :)

I still don't like wearing pastels but they are great for decorating a small room or apartment because they reflect more light, which in turn makes the space appear much larger. I have always loved pastels with one exception, when I was in high school being a brooding teen, listening to The Smiths in my bedroom (still love The Smiths). I only liked and wore black then. Pastels are very comforting and beautiful to me. They remind me of the 1950's, my Grandmother, cozy, girlie bedrooms and vanities. They are also very "Shabby Chic". Thanks for the post. It is very enjoyable and pretty on the eye.

I have a nice collection of vintage decorating books, and pastel rooms are shown in every decade from 1920s (oldest I have) through the 1990s (newest). The comment from the Addams Family film was a joke about Goth culture, which was at the peak of its popularity, rather than a critique of decorating trends at the time the film was made. Actually, the joke would have worked just as well in a script of the Addams teevee show (1960s) had it not been filmed only in black and white.

I'm not a huge fan of pastels in home decor, but I love them for the table. Lu Ray lusterware, opaque milk glass in a variety of colors, pastel table linens, pink and yellow and pale green pyrex serving dishes - I love it all! Not sure if I could do pastel walls. Except yellow or a pale green. I've lived with pale pink and blue walls - not fun! The key to pastels I think is to 1) make sure they're deep hues, not too washed out and 2) use them with other, non-pastel colors. Unless it's easter, there is such a thing as too much pastel.

Pine from TheRakishTilt says:
Pastels can be intimidating but they do have a place. I painted pastel blue walls to brighten up a dark hallway and toned it down a little with richer darker wall hangings. My good friend has an array of pastel colored molding that makes her wall paper pop and completes the look without the stark contrast of white or stained wood. From someone who once wore nothing but black...I love color :)

Pastels, if done right and with some sophisticated pieces can be very chic as so many times it can be very cloying and overly cute!

Lovely article and selection of pastel items! I have to agree with many of the others: pastels are always in fashion for me. I have a mad hatter style tea set in soft blues, greens, pinks, purples and yellows that looks great all mis-matched. Somehow I don't think it would work if it was in bright tones; pastels have the special ability to pull off amazing combinations because of the sweet, dainty colors.

Last spring, to get my home ready to sell I painted the walls a soft yellow, bought a sort of muted robin's egg blue sofa, put up curtains in the same vein. It went perfectly with the shabby chic faded blue green corner stand and my gorgeous washstand with aqua, pale green and cream tiles and some of the art I had on the walls. A few pieces of retro glass here and there and my house became hip and modern. As it turned out, I now rent it from the people I sold it to. They now have the responsibilities of home ownership, I get to enjoy it! Loved your post.

BlueBrocade from BlueBrocade says:
Have always loved pastels, but generally when I wear or decorate with them I anchored them with charcoals, grays, and neutrals. They are soft and light, without overpowering, and don't compete visually to drown us out with intensity. Pastels are chameleon colors I think. At times calming, but can also be delightful and whimsical when paired with gold or silver, or mod when paired with blacks. Lovely post!

ha ha, I remember that exact part of the Addams Family movie! Our tumblr is just chocked full of pastels lately. I've always found that pastels paired with a dark accent make for a really hot combo. Pretty on the outside, but just a little dangerous - that's our style!

Beautiful colors, in any shade, can be incorporated into a decorating scheme that uses timeless style. I love how we can bring the past into the present through still useful items, and even recreate a vintage feel through a modern piece by using the right colors. Lovely article
