(Music by J. Seger, Jack Zylkin)
When 25-year-old engineer Jack Zylkin came across a vintage typewriter left curbside for the dump, he couldn’t allow such a spectacular machine to be trashed. After briefly displaying it on his mantelpiece, he decided try to put it to use, hauling it down to Hive76, a hackerspace he founded in downtown Philly. Their motto? “Make things awesome by making awesome things.”
Egged on by his tech-savvy buddies, Zylkin soon developed the USB Typewriter, a modified machine which leaves the typewriter looking, feeling, and working like a regular typewriter — attached to a contemporary computer. In his own words, his invention is “a groundbreaking advancement in the field of obsolescence.”
With this new gadget, Zylkin collides old technology with new, offering an authentic vintage typewriting experience combined with a modern computer’s functionality and convenience.

This is the most awesome idea I have ever seen! I love the aspect of merging new technology with old technology - in addition, there is something very satisfying about banging it out on the keys.

I second that Tracy! This is truely amazingly creative. People always have to bang on the "Old" typewriter when they see one because they were very innovative in their time. This generation doesn't realize that their iPad and any PC started from this. Much to be appreciated. Kind of hard to wrap your mind around if from "prehistoric" computer days :) Awesome!

When I was a kid, I would type up mystery and adventure stories on an old typewriter. By the time I was in middle school, computers were taking over. I love seeing this combination of the old and the new. A few days ago on Etsy, I saw an iPad case with a granny style doily sewn onto it as a decoration. So clever!

Love it! I trained as a QWERTY touch-typist at school in the 60s. There's nothing quite like the sound and rhythm of tapping on an old typewriter, and they're so beautiful. Modern technology is great too but I like the idea of not throwing the baby out with the bathwater with every new piece of equipment.

What a brilliant idea, I love old typewriter's, I feel they inspire creative language, so many words and amazing texts have been produced from these beautiful vintage machines, Now to be able to connect a typewriter to your computer is amazing :-)

This is awesome, and very creative. I always feel sad when I see an old typewriter on the curb or in a junk shop. From the questions about Steampunk, I gather you all have not seen the steampunk laptop mods that are out there, most notably Datamancer's designs. There is even one made out of an old telegraph machine that is lovely. I love that as much as people are developing the newer, faster, sleeker devices, many of us still have a yen for more the elaborate, vintage design.
