Creating a cohesive shop is the most important tool for branding yourself, and one of your biggest allies in your search for repeat customers. Customers who love your style will share your shop with others and come back again and again.
Further, cohesive shops are successful in search or wherever they are found. When you bring a shopper in from search, it’s so important that they be interested in not just that item, but in browsing through the rest of your shop — this is how a great deal of sales are made. Now, instead of each item working for itself, they become a team that helps captivate a customer and encourage her to make a purchase!
A cohesive shop will help promote itself- when you have a clearly defined style, bloggers and others who would like to feature your shop will be drawn to it! Sellers who are chosen as featured seller and who are contacted for media features all have cohesive shops.
So, how do you create a cohesive shop? Here are our tips below:
What’s your style?
Define Your Style: Can you describe the style of your shop in just a few words? This is a great indicator that you have a cohesive style. If you’re not there yet, try to describe in a few words what you would like your style to be.
I’d describe imyourpresent’s style as kitten-bling, and her charming vision has made her shop a favorite destination, and drawn tons of attention:
Product Assortment
Create Your Boutique: Do your products make sense being sold together? Could you imagine your Etsy shop translating to a brick-and-mortar store? There are always exceptions, so if you have a great idea, do it! The point is that your shop assortment should be an intentional choice.
Know Thy Customer: If you have multiple product lines in your shop, consider whether they all speak to the same customer. If a shopper comes in on one item, how likely is she to want to browse the rest of your shop?
Girlscantell sells a variety of gifty items — coasters, journals, bottle openers, lunch boxes, dish towels. But it all makes sense because the shop is a great gift destination, and they’re all adorned with her signature style line artwork.
Photos and Shop Appearance
The Big Picture: Photo backgrounds that complement each other can make your shop look cohesive. All the backgrounds don’t have to be exactly the same — in fact, a little variety can be nice, but they should play well together.
Set the Mood: Backgrounds and photography styles can help drive your look home. If your shop is rustic, what about rustic wood backgrounds? For a clean, modern look, how about simple, white backgrounds? Morning light can look soft and cheerful; early evening light can be more mysterious and romantic. There’s no need to go overboard here — clean backgrounds will look good with almost everything, and will highlight the items and let them shine. Just consider that if your backgrounds are saying something, you want them to be speaking to the style of your shop.
Banner Time: Do the colors of your banner go well with the colors of your photos? Does the font style echo your aesthetic? A good banner that will probably sit well with your shop is a detail slice of one of your item photos. No banner would be better than the wrong banner though, so feel free to go bannerless for now, or purchase a banner from a great graphic designer on Etsy.
ClothandPatina’s shop title describes her style and product assortment as “Rustic French Country Home Decor and Gifts,” and her photos and banner reinforce her look with weathered textures, woods and whites, and natural light.
Now Go Forth and Cohesify!
But won’t I get bored?: I think a lot of sellers have a variety of interests and styles they like and fear that having a cohesive shop will limit them. In fact, it can be wonderfully creatively freeing! Instead of crafting each item on its own, you will have fun creating and sharing your unique vision through your shop, which itself becomes a work of art.

most times I have too much inspiration that i need to reel it in. If I dont keep myself focused I end up making all kinds of things. have to learn that just because I can make it, doesnt necessarily mean I should sell it too. I dont want my shop to appear scatter-brained or messy so i've tried to keep my line of items as revelant to the next item as possible. retaking my photos has helped a lot too.. simple is better when it comes to product photography for sure.

I TOTALLY agree....To start, I'm trying to tweak everything I have and have already redone my banner to reflect the colors I want. I need to have photos that are closer to the item and more consistent backgrounds. As I currently offer diverse types of items, it becomes a little difficult streamlining backgrounds and "props." As I was never into a "spare and bare" look, I also don't want to clutter my pix with too many props but at the same time offer things in some context. A work in (slow!) progress I'm afraid.....

Forgot to add..... I also want to show my creativity by standing out from others in some way, as there is SO much sameness of either theme or merchandise out there. Without trying to be mean, how many "shabby chic" and "paris apartment" themes can there be? This often make people feel as though they are looking at the same shop over and over again!

I've been having fun with distilling my personal style into a shop - it's been quite the adventure! Sometimes it's hard to do that if you have more than one style you are fond of.....but I find there are threads of commonality in all things I'm visually drawn to, so trying to find a balance between all these things has been my approach so far. I would add only that varying the geometric proportions of subject and ground amongst images can be effective also. This is a great article. Maybe its time to update my banner to something a little more integrated that includes my logo and some abstract and exciting image. I have got to say, this WORKS. I have been working on getting my shop to look more like many pieces of the same puzzle for a long time now, even deactivating several listings that I don't feel fit in anymore or the photos need to be redone. I also included a photo of my packaging on every item and now my views from listings to other listings in my shop are almost as high as my search views. sometimes higher! And that's a big step because it means that though they may not be interested in the item they clicked on, they are interested in your style and the more cohesive each item is to the last, the further into your shop they'll dig! I loved this article and the online workshop michelle did. So relevant and so helpful!

yes great information, but what frustrates me everytime i read one of these articles, especially about photography, is that it always features pictures of very small items. Frankly i think small items are easy to photograph, especially since they fit in a lightbox. I'd like to get some help with photographing larger items like quilts. I can get good pictures outdoors in the summer months with a nice green background, but in the winter, the background is not so nice. And it is difficult to get good light indoors, especially since my camera isn't great. Does anyone have tips for me? I would appreciate it!

Thank you for your article. I've been struggling with my shop for so long and didn't see what was obvious. I had noticed people were drawn to two backgrounds that I use often now I just need to decide which one. This is something I've been working on for a while. Sometimes it's hard to really understand the vibe you want your shop to have until you've messed it up and gone the wrong way.... then you have to spend the time to bring your shop back to what you want. This can take forever... creating our products only accounts for some of the time we put into our shops... the rest is marketing, photographs, descriptions. etc. whew...but in the end it's all worth it! When I have a bride that is so happy with her invitations it just makes my day.

Berry the % rate has to do with the positive to negatives ratios. But even some of the positive feedback contains negative comments about product breaking. I understand you can't please everyone- but out of all the shops on Etsy, it seems Etsy could have found someone with a cohesive shop AND little to no negs and neutrals to use as good examples for us to learn from. Great Post! I am a new shop owner and find myself overwhelmed when buying and then presenting the items. Right now ... If I see a vintage piece of clothing ..no matter the style... I grab it. I've looked at vintage toys, house wares, decor, etc. I feel like I want to offer it all. How do I narrow it all down and find "my style" I think I'm caught up in getting product in my shop and starting to make any kind of money. Events in my life...have brought me to Etsy in order to support myself and children. I have to make it work so maybe the desperation is overwhelming me in designing my store

classicpurse says:
A certain theme, style or group of colors may be very presentable, but I also like to include something odd or exciting that catches a discerning eye. I enjoy changing my collections with the seasons, such as pale colors in the spring, brights in the summer, soft earth tones in the fall and darker tones throughout the winter. Some collections may have three or four colors, such as coral, lime and periwinkle. Others may have more, such as olive, copper, taupe, ruby and violet. I like to stay with the same sturdy patterns, but experiment with a variety of color combinations. A simple classic pattern seems to sell best, because it can accessorize any fashion. Over-embellishment tends to attract a rare buyer. Items of necessity, such as clothing, also seem to sell best. Everyone enjoys a practical item, such as a purse or tote bag. Storage is a big business. A cohesive site may help sell items, but the choice of items is also just as important. For example, in difficult financial times, jewelry may not be an absolute necessity. Really enjoyed your aticle...

WOW! So I have been selling on Etsy for a little less than a year now. Some of this stuff I have started developing on my own with the help of other awesome Etsians suggesting better photos and me browsing for any kind of photo advice. But the cohesion thing...I just barely (literally, like twenty minutes ago) complimented someone on his shop because it all blended together nicely, it was basic, easy to look at and to the point. This article just reinforced my view of his shop to myself which tells me, yep, that's where I need to go.
