In the spirit of Holiday Boot Camp, we’ve updated this canonical resource originally written by the esteemed HeyMichelle. Are you working your shop into shape?
What I hear most from Etsy sellers as they grow their businesses is that they struggle to get found in search by shoppers online. Thankfully, its a problem you can solve with a little know-how and time to experiment with using the right copy. The tips below will help you work on your shop to make it easier for shoppers to find you right at that moment they are ready to buy.
As you work on your listings, be sure to think like a shopper each step of the way — what will grab them and communicate everything they need to make that purchase.
Step 1: Brainstorm Keywords and Phrases
Each listing should start with a list of keywords and phrases that you think your target buyer will search when shopping. Use this brainstorming list to get the ball rolling and be sure your titles, tags and description answer all of those questions.
Pro Tip: Search Suggestions
Did you know that Etsy’s search bar can give you a leg up on tracking what customers are searching? Start typing what you sell in the search bar. The words that appear are popular customer search terms. This will give you the exact keywords and phrases shoppers are searching, so be sure to use ones that are relevant to your product in your titles, tags and description. Think of synonyms and try those in the search field as well!
Descriptions: Look in your listing’s description — often, there are good ideas in there that you are organically using when describing your item that make great keywords! Test some of these descriptive words in your titles and tags.
Step 2: Apply Search Terms to Your Listings
Now that you have a list of keywords and phrases you want to try, work them into item listings.
Create powerful titles. While keeping your titles enticing and buyer-friendly, add more meaningful terms that buyers are likely to search. Keep the most important search terms at the beginning of the listing to maximize their importance in search.
Pro Tip: Including your main category in the title (handmade, supplies, vintage) doesn’t necessarily increase your relevancy in Etsy Search for those terms. It does, however, communicate to a shopper without a doubt what the item is. Experiment for yourself to see what words in your title help your conversion rate of browsers into buyers.
Maximize your tags. Plug in your list of keywords and phrases and use all available spaces. Each one is another opportunity to find your shopper!
Diversity matters. Don’t name all of your similar items the same (or nearly the same) thing! This targets just one type of shopper, you want to keep a bit of diversity in your keywords to try and target a variety of buyers and bring them to you shop through different search results.
Put your most important terms in both your titles and tags.
Important terms to the front: If your titles are long (more than one line in “List” mode), put very important search terms so they fall in the first line.
Step 3: Make Sure It’s Working
Shop Stats: Keep an eye on your stats to see your hard work in action. Shop stats lists what keywords people are using to find you in search. How can you use this information to improve your titles, tags and description?
- Use any listed words that you are not already using.
- Include synonyms for your most popular keywords.
If you are getting lots of hits but no sales, maybe you are optimizing for the wrong keywords to find a shopper ready to buy — try testing out new phrases, and being very specific with style. Experiment to see what works!
Make measured changes: If your search terms are already bringing people into your shop, go slowly with making major changes so you can see what’s working before doing more.
Step 4: Bring It Together
Get help: If you need help with coming up with search terms or improving your search ranking, try joining one of these teams about relevancy or SEO. Or read more here.
See more examples: We worked with a few sellers on their search relevancy. Watch these videos below:

Why not just have the basic etsy search box search the content of listings, obviating the need for a seller to add a bunch of tags that repeat the key terms already found in the listing? Or, add it as an advanced / alternate search feature the way ebay does -- with a check box to "include description" as the content one is searching?

Thanks for the comments, everyone! Sharon Moores from slathered has a great question about making titles creative while also making them good for search: I'd say, try to have the "creative" part of your title include a good search word for the item. Terms that describe styles and colors are usually both good search terms and attractive. So, for this (lovely!) ring: http://www.etsy.com/listing/89107161/banded-ring-silver-and-botswana-agate What about "Botswana" or "African" being involved in the creative title? Also, there is a popular style called "Natural History" for items created with geodes, agate, petrified wood, etc that you could work in. You can find the current popular themes in the monthly Merchandising Desk articles: http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2012/from-etsys-merchandising-desk-march-2012/ Also, definitely include "cocktail ring" in the title! That is a great search term (found it in your tags)! Typing "cocktail ring" in, "chunky" and oversized would be good to try to mix in as well. So... CURRENT: Banded Ring: Silver and Botswana Agate Ring SUGGESTION: (something like) Botswana Chunky Cocktail Ring - silver, brown and black agate ring - size 8 Definitely think about checking out the search Teams from Step 4- other people are very helpful for brainstorming! I hope this helps!

Tagging is no fun! Only if I could find a right way to do it. For titles, I think I am overdoing my titles a bit, trying to put in as much info as possible making them practically unreadable. I went from one extreme to another. For example my old title: "Anebella Earrings" http://www.etsy.com/listing/63287096/abella-earrings to new title: "Snow White Bridal Earrings. Large Frosted Lucite Flower. Clear Swarovski Crystal. Antique Bronze Metal Beads. Long Black Gunmetal Chains" http://www.etsy.com/listing/85926427/snow-white-bridal-earrings-large-frosted Unreadable, I know. Also great point on mixing up wording in similar items. I have to do that for all my bridal earrings. They all start the same: Snow White Bridal Earrings..... So much work to be done. This is tough for jewelry designer. Try to search for "amethyst necklace" you get 22,610 items. Alright, narrow it down to "amethyst crystal necklace" 4,876 items, wow, how can I hope for anyone ever find me? I get most views from treasuries, and it is a lot work every day to get my listing in front of a potential buyer. I really want to improve on my shop's "findability", is that a word? Thank you Michelle for all the information. Back to work. ♥Eva

As a buyer it's pretty much impossible to find what I want in search. I wish you guys would make search easier, more intuitive, and less reliant on "tags" that I have to rack my brain to think of. I also wish you'd reinstate the "bet you'd love these things" section on the homepage. REALLY miss that. Honestly, without that "bet you'd love these things" feed and WITH the horribly difficult search, it's really not any fun shopping here anymore. :+( I find I'm back to live shopping and Amazon.

Correct me if I am wrong, please, but I thought total characters and space permitted was 70. "Vintage 1950s dress - coutryside corset spring flower in white and black - medium" This has 81 characters with spaces, 68 with no spaces. Which is correct? Thanks.

Awesome. I have already put some of these tips into action, and my views have shown an improvement. Unfortunately, this is not a static process, where you can write the title, descriptions, & tags and then just leave them. I find that I'm constantly rewriting all of these things. Currently my titles are way too long... so I'm heading back to fix them again.

It seems like everyone uses Facebook and Pinterest and tweeting etc to promote their shops. What about someone like me who does not use any of those extras? How can I get people to notice my shop and my creations - ??? With the exception of 2 sales in one week a few weeks ago, woo whoo! - Im just not getting noticed!! And it really seems to me the majority of people looking are other etsy sellers - how can we get etsy to be as well known as e-bay???

Although this advice sounds great in retrospect...once implemented I'm not sure it's the reality. I mean, there is always room for improvement but It doesn't seem to be as tride and true as some of the older methods this has replaced.

ransomedtreasure from ransomedtreasure says:
This is interesting advice but I would still love to understand the logrythm or matrix (or whatever it is) of how the "relevancy" order is selected. I Have items listed in many types of categories. Yesterday I put "fabric bins" in a search and found my first listed bin on the 8th page of 45. I read the advice and took out the words "organizing" from my titles (they used to be "fabric organizing bin". On some items, I then added a description in front of the words "fabric bin". Last of all, I relisted some after midnight last night so that they would also be recent. This morning I get up and try the search again....Now my first listing is on the 9th page. Most of the bins in front of mine do not use any "clearer" of a description than the ones which I have listed, in fact I do not see how "reversible" or "ready to ship" are any more descript than "woodland"....(these words being the only ones before "fabric bin" in the titles). I sell items, so I'm not complaining on that level, I just would love to understand how "relevancy" works. I understood about the most recently listed, that's fairly mathematical :)

Doesn't answer my question: Is the description text searchable via google as it is on another very large venue for antiques and collectibles. This can be very valuable when selling books which might have a lot of unique keyword subjects such as unique personal names in local history books or, for example a book about native Americans with unusual names like Thayendanega [Joseph Brant].

What about title length? For Google, we'd been advised to keep it under 72 characters (I believe that was the number), but for Etsy, are longer titles recommended? Seems so. If longer titles may be recommended, as long as they provide more description, will this still hurt our Google ranking, or will Google just see so many of the characters?

Can anyone give me some suggestions on how I can verify that my art got on site and where it is located?

What great ideas to increase traffic! Another good idea to help determine the most relevant search terms would be to have a potential customer (friend or unabis person) describe your items to you. This would help a seller to get into the minds of customers.

This is very helpful, thank you! :) I just want to add that when I am searching for childrens' book illustrators for treasuries or my own book collection I am really surprised to see how many books are listed here on etsy without mentioning the artist/illustrator in the tags and/or titles. Often I only see the artist mentioned in an item's description, if the artist is mentioned at all. Sellers can really benefit from listing this information because a childrens' book collector is often looking for specific artists/illustrators.

I am learning with my new store how important tagging and using social media sites are. I just added my Etsy store DiscoveringFun to twitter, pinterest, google+, facebook, bitly and I am hopeful to make some sales before Halloween. After that, I am leaving my dream of becoming a professional Etsy seller in real life and throught google and Etsy! I have not tried joining a team yet like the "vesties" but have seen people use it as a tag? Are teams open to new people? I want to be in a team... Here is my most hearted product on DiscoveringFun its a book about ghost http://www.etsy.com/listing/111024126/classic-ghost-stories-more-scary-stories stories that my teacher in 3rd grade used to read us from the 80s.
