This video is part of Get Found Month. Will you be joining us at the Etsy Success Symposium on March 30?
Nothing will help sell your wearable items online better than beautifully modeled photos. Models give the shopper an idea of what the piece will look like on and helps convey the mood and style of your work. On top of that, modeled photos get lots of attention from curators — people are very drawn to the human face.
In this video, Minkie of the Etsy shop Minxshop shares her tips for taking modeled photos. Minxshop has gotten lots of attention because of her photos. She’s been Etsy’s Featured Seller, has been featured on a number of major blogs, and has made multiple appearances on Etsy’s homepage and in our shopping emails.
Be sure to watch the first video in this series, Great Product Photos: An Introduction.

I try to have at least one picture of every piece of jewelry being worn in my listings. I think it helps with sales a ton because people like to see how something looks on. Otherwise they can't tell scale or how it hangs, etc. Usually I end up being my own model though, as you can see to the left...

What's really nice about Etsy is that many of the clothes sellers use models that actually look like real people! Sadly, not many of us are built like skinny 19 year olds, so it's lovely to see what clothes would look like on someone more "normal". At my time of life I especially appreciate the more mature models... that gentleman wearing the black & red scarf is just gorgeous! :-)

OrbitingDebris from OrbitingDebris says:
I have a closet full of amazing vintage clothing to sell on etsy, but I haven't listed it because I know I need to photograph it on models. I've not used models because I can't figure out how to keep it from being very time consuming and therefore a money-losing proposition (and that's assuming I could find a model to work for free). Of course, I have to figure my time as a cost, and I don't want to end up making a pitiful hourly wage. For those of you who do use models, I'm curious how long it takes start to finish, on average, to photograph and list a piece of clothing with a model and props. I see all this great clothing photography on etsy, but all I can ever think is, "How are they making any money by the time they do all that?" - especially when I see an amazingly modeled photograph of a $15 blouse. Just taking and going through 200 photos seems like it would be a long process, and that's just for one item. Am I making this more complicated than it needs to be? Please share your secrets! I want great photos with models, too!

For most of my merchandise, my models weigh approximately 1000 lbs. So, for the best exposure, should I take a photo or 2 to show at least the horse's profile with the rhythm beads and mane clip on the horse, then take close ups of the items while still on the animal? I have pics of the items on jewelry displays currently.

Using kids to "hand-model" our products has been the best thing for our shop's look (and we're not selling clothes). And the thing is, it energized my attitude about photography in a big way! Sheer fun. One of my favorite things about photographing with (children) models are the "out-takes" -- ones that I can't use for the shop necessarily, but are just a total capture of the moment and personality.

seriously, 200 - 500 shots per item... At most, I'll take a dozen. For a hand made piece at a premium price point time of course you want the perfect shot. But I'd rather spend more time scouting a new location with great light like Minkie says. Add a few effects and just the right cropping!

Well done Minkie!I am always intrigued by your photos! I am happy to see a spot featuring working with models. It seems like most of the tips I have seen are more related to jewelry etc. and I think many can use your awesome advice! When I first set out I sort of just made do with whatever photos I could get and it made a big difference for me when I made the decision that it was worth it for me to invest in doing trades/paying to really get the quality I wanted.I also recently invested in a used DSLR camera and it has been super inspiring!Photo shoots are kind of the 'icing on the cake' for me-I just love to see my whole process from first design inspiration to a finished garment-come to life in photos!

I would love to use models but what if you can't find or afford a great model?( I'm not talking about some 15yr old waif...Just an attractive woman of a certain age that all women can imagine themselves wearing the jewelry. By the time i'm done doing all the things i'm supposed to be doing I'll have to add the costs to my prices and try to find time to actually design and then make the piece. I quess i'll have to make do with my mannikin for the time being...great tips though...and i love Sandra Brunks ideas...i find them original and creative and i would do that Sandra!

With me, it generally goes: trick, order or bribe husband and children into the back yard. Take photographs. Trade camera and model some things yourself. Have daughter shout 'DON'T LAUGH, DON'T LAUGH' at son until he stops trying to make a serious supermodel face and actually smiles. Go inside and look at photo's together, making fun of the awkward shots in between real shots where someone makes a weird face.

Virginia Huebscher from thelostcreativity says:
it's a good tutorial. but....if you would count the amount of time and effort (make-up, hair, accessories etc) that goes into just one shooting....it's almost a waste as the product mostly never cover the costs that arise from that work. who pays for the time? is it included in the prize of the article?

As someone who's done styling for fashion shoots using other models, the greatest resource that has yet to be mentioned is MODELMAYHEM.com. Here you can find photographers, models, and stylist who will work for free to build their portfolio. I know the site has lots of members in the US and Canada. I discovered the site 3 years ago in fashion design school and have come to build many great relationships with upcoming models and worked repeatedly with several local photographers. An easy way to cut down on time when modelling clothing yourself is to buy a remote shutter release clicker with a trigger that you can hold in your hand. OR What I use is Canon G12 digital camera with an lcd screen that flips around to face you. It's sorta like having a mirror while to take photos, and has cut down time drastically. Now, with practice and experience it only takes 5 tries for me to get the 5 shots I need for Etsy listings. Using the same props (whether it's shoes, makeup, jewellry) each time also cuts down on time styling and makes your shop look unified.

Good advice 'cause a real model is so much more interesting than a dressform or (in my case) a hanger. I don't think I will ever be able to take and look through more than 30 shots per item but if you're an amateur it's a good idea to ask a friend or more friends to take photos with you - using different cameras and at the same time - so you can choose from different points of view and manners of taking photos. Enjoyed the video!

Awesome advice! Coupled with some photography lessons, these tips will be really effective. Any advice on modeling Jewelry? I am trying to add some of my handmade jewelry to my shop and am getting stuck on the modeling aspect. It just looks so lame on a form or table! My only concern would be the comment about models working for free. Just like the rest of us they are trying to pay the rent doing what they love, and I don't think its fair to expect a model to work for free. Friends (and in my case, sisters) are a different story, but people who are trying to make a profession out of it need to get paid too.

Thank you so much for the advise, i am finding all of these blogs a great help to starting out! I do have a question for anyone who can answer, I make jewelry and when I take photos of the pieces on my model I have been trying to keep her face in the pic, but then you can't really see the piece very well. Should I zoom in or should I keep her face then have the close ups in my photo box? Thank you again!
