How-Tuesday: Adopt Me Dog Vests

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

daniellexo

Late last year, I started working with a new dog rescue here in Brooklyn, Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. This rescue is a little different than most.We save dogs from the southern United States, where pet overpopulation is a big problem, and bring these dogs back to Brooklyn. A few months ago, I took a trip with my fellow volunteer and Etsy staffer, Lo, to pick up a van full of dogs in need from our favorite shelter in Florence, Alabama. This shelter takes in about 50 dogs a day in the summer and they are in desperate need of fosters and volunteers. If you are near Florence, please consider helping!

As soon as we made it to Brooklyn, each dog got fitted with an “Adopt Me” vest, and I realized these vests were way too generic. Our rescue is far from normal, and our dogs are unique. I wanted to come up with an alternative — something that anyone could make. You don’t even need a sewing machine — the only tool you need is a pair of scissors! I hope this how-to inspires you to make a few vests for your local rescue.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Cotton fabric (about 1/2 yard per vest)
  • Velcro strips
  • Webbing
  • Double-sided interfacing (such as Heat ‘N’ Bond)
  • Cardstock
  • Spray paint
  • Iron

Directions:

1. Download and print these vest templates: small, medium, large, and Adopt Me text.

2. Cut out a rectangle of fabric and a rectangle of interfacing that is slightly bigger than the template you’re using.

3. Bond the double-sided interfacing to the fabric piece using an iron (follow the instructions that come with your interfacing) and cut out a shape that is 1/2″ bigger than the template.

4. Cut out another piece of fabric the exact size of your template.

5. Bond this smaller shape inside the slightly larger piece with an iron.

6. Cut slits every 1/4″ around the edge of the larger piece of fabric.

7. Fold the edges over and bond with an iron.

8. You’ll cut out 1 more rectangle of fabric and interfacing and bond those together. Using this piece, cut out another shape that is  slightly smaller than your template.

9. Now you’ll create a sandwich.  Cut your strips of Velcro to about 8 inches in length (these will attach underneath the dog’s torso) and cut a 4 inch long strip of webbing (this is where the collar will slide through). Place the bonded pieces, then your strips of Velcro and a folded piece of webbing; your final piece of fabric will rest on top (with the bonding side down). Iron this all on both sides to create your bonded vest.

10. Cut out “Adopt Me” from a piece of cardstock and place it on your vest. (A bit of spray adhesive can help keep this in place.) Hold the spraypaint back 12″ from the vest and go over the spot lightly until you have an even coat of paint. Let dry and then remove the stencil.

11. There you have it! Get together with a group of friends and do this craftivism project in an assembly line to create a big pile of “Adopt Me” vests to donate to your local shelter.

If you make your own Adopt Me vest, share a photo with us in the Etsy Labs Flickr group!

Awesome! If anyone would like to have a sewing circle for www.lcarescue.org , we are in dire need of vests for all sizes of dogs. We are nonprofit with no brick and mortar building so all dogs are fostered in our volunteers own homes. When our rescues wear these vests, we see adoptions go much quicker enabling us to save more lives. Please contact me if you'd like to create and donate vests for LCAR? Thanks for this!

I live near Palm Springs California and got my "Lord Xanth" from the county shelter and really lucked out. They said he was a German Shepherd mix but it turns out that he's Ridgeback, Greyhound, and Chow ... super fast ... super smart (he closes the door behind himself when he comes in from the yard). He still sleeps on my bed most of the time except now that it is super hot here in the desert he sleeps on the tile floor for the coolness ... even though the AC keeps everything around 80 instead of the 115 it is outside. I need to make a Service Dog vest for him ... the ones online are just TOO expensive and I don't like them so the best thing for me to do is make it myself using your helpful suggestions. Will let you know how it turns out. :-)

Cute, but I'm confused... I thought big cities were terrible places for pets - especially dogs. Where do they go to run around? Where do they go to the bathroom? Don't the neighbors (packed into close quarters) get annoyed with barking etc...? I thought dogs were better in open countryside, or suburbs. Obviously I've never owned a dog. :) Cute idea anyway.

A wonderful article! I absolutely love the idea! My husband and I are firm supporters of pet adoption, our family so far consists of two cats (one was a stray kitten we rescued, the other kitten's last owner's home was being foreclosed on and she couldn't keep her, so we took her in), and a 10 yr. old Lab mix who's been our baby since the day we adopted her at a rescue the year we were married (3 yrs ago now). She'd spent most of her life first on the streets as a puppy after being abandoned, and then the rest in the shelter. She really is the sweetest thing, and it's a wonder she was never adopted before we came along.

Every time I read post like this it makes me tear up. I feel so bad that so many animals are left homeless and abused. I wish I was in a situation that I could at least foster a few furry friends. Unfortunately I have a very dog aggressive German Shepherd that would never allow it. I love that you have shared this with us, It would be wonderful to get together with shelters in our area but because none of them are no kill I will not be spending my time and energy on them. (long story) I really wish time and energy would be spent on educating people the importance of neutering or spaying their animals. I think what you are doing is so wonderful and what a great idea.

We adopted Diesel (one of our shop's namesakes and the cheeky fellow in my avatar here) from one of our local animal shelters. He's AWESOME. Even when he's doing something he's not supposed to, he's so funny it never really matters. :-) People completely overlook the virtues of a rescued dog, and it's terrible, because they're just as amazing as any dog you'll find at a breeder. And there are SO MANY out there who desperately need a home. Thank you guys for what you do, and how you give, and thank you to everyone who has ever rescued or fostered a dog (or cat) in need. The world needs more people like you. ♥

Great article! Speaking of adoption... Our great captain in European Street Team, Estella rescued a dog in Turkey last week, found hit and injured by a car on the road. She had the heart and courage to take him to the vet, and after four hours of operation, he will be able to LIVE and walk again. The members of the team also contributed to clear the bill for the vet. Estella looks after 12 other dogs with her mum, she is desperate to find a home for him in Turkey or in Europe:) Hope, its ok to put here her blog where you can read more about the story of Urchin, as Estella made a lot of efforts to keep the team informed.

This is a super tutorial because I dont know how to sew and want to make these vests. I'm going to put the words on them "Don't forget to get me spayed (or neutered)". (that is a requirement of the shelters before adoption anyway but maybe would make others think about it) . Thank goodness nobody on this comment board needs to be reminded of that! Just today I was discussing with my granddaughter having a pet can require about a 15 YEAR committment FULLTIME, litter box, pooper scooper, etc. She changed her mind ..... :)

Fabulous idea! I've only ever had rescue dogs so I know first hand what a good home means to them. My current two, Sacha and Tara are both rescues. They were each a year old when they found us. I say 'found us' because when we went to the shelter to get Sacha, she was huddled in the back of the kennel looking so forlorn. She's a short haired collie and had the saddest expression. We asked that she be brought out to us and she obeyed immediately. After looking at a few others we finally came back to Sacha. When they opened the door the second time, she slipped the collar and took off. I called to her 'dog lets go home' and she came right to my side and has been there for the past 13 years. She's trained as a Therapy dog to work in the hospitals but her hips have started to give her trouble so she's retired. Tara (english Staffordshire) came to us a year later when we went to find a playmate for Tara. Although we were 'just looking' that day, she jumped up into my lap, gave me a big kiss and who can resist that?

I would love to make a donation for the organization and I think there would be others like me who want to do it as well. Can you post a link to the donation page?

I can't wait to leave my day job so we can take ...few dogs in need—my partner and I are really longing for their company too! In my parent's house back in Poland there was always a pack of four-legged friends, some born in the house, others from the street - people often drop unwanted dogs to the countryside, not the shelter hoping for the villagers to adopt them. Two current ones came from the dog rescue and you couldn't dream of most loving friends! Here in Ireland shelters are forced to put down horrid number of healthy dogs a year... I remember heartbreaking figures as high as 10K, massive number for such small population country. People of Ireland, help shelters re-homing these lovely creatures and learn to love them, there is more to dogs then their farm and hunting duties!

I actually grew up in Alabama, so I know first hand the problems they have there with so many homeless dogs. Its very sad to see dogs wandering the streets and begging for food. My mom used to volunteer for the Human Society there when I was a kid so we always had many rescued cats and dogs at our house. I am so grateful for organizations like yours in Brooklyn that can make the lives of these dogs better! You guys are angels on earth for these pups!

I just printed out your blog, mainly because I know people who work with homeless animals, and I thought that they could use a no-sew pattern for vests on rescue dogs. I might even get these made with the help of others in the local program for adults with mental illness. One of the therapy dogs who visit the local hospital is a rescued shih tzu; his mom dresses him up and takes him to see patients.

She was wearing an adopt me T-shirt when we first found her at the shelter. These are probably a lot easier to get on. :)

Thank you for promoting animal rescue! Shelters are always full of great pets waiting to be adopted, waiting to be loved and to love back. It is heartbreaking to see all the puppies and pregnant dogs at shelters. The fact that every year thousands of animal are put to sleep just because they weren't adopted is even more heartbreaking. Spaying and neutering all of our pets would greatly help eriadicating this problem. They say that money doesn't buy love. The truth is that it can. By paying the small adoption fee to adopt a dog, you can get a bundle of unconditional love. Animals are Angels sent from above.
