For this week’s How-Tuesday, we’re resurfacing an old favorite. Enjoy!
Just because the first flurries have decimated your window garden, there’s no need to settle for a season lackluster and dreary. Bring a tiny lush world into your home with this week’s How-Tuesday video! Kimberly Sevilla of Rose Red & Lavender shows us how to make terrariums out of light bulbs — an urban gardener’s dream. This project is fun, simple, and completely customizable (gnomes, anyone?). Also keep in mind that you’re not limited to light bulbs, any container will work just fine (mason jars, vials, fish bowls, old medicine bottles, etc.).
Lets get started!

Materials Needed:
- Container
- Charcoal
- Soil
- Rocks
- Sphagnum moss
- Needle-nose pliers
- Long tweezers
- Screwdriver
- Plants

Step 1:
Choose your container. Anything that is clear and can hold water, either open or closed, will work. In this how-to we use a light bulb. You will need to remove the guts of the bulb, so put on your safety goggles!

Step 2:
Add a layer of rocks. You can use regular stones or expanded clay pellets — just make sure your rocks are clean. Fill your container approximately 1/3 full with your layer of rocks.

Step 3:
Add a barrier layer of sphagnum or green moss, a layer of activated charcoal and a layer of soil (organic soil works best). Consider what type of greenery you’re planning to nurture: which plants work well together? What type of container do you have? Moss needs only a fine layer of soil, whereas plants need a little more for the roots to grow.

Step 4:
Gently settle in your plant and decorate the interior of the terrarium with figurines, twigs or other ornamental additions.

Please make the point that taking moss from the natural environment is very wrong... it can seriously damage a very fragile & vulnerable ecosystem. Same goes for taking any plants from the wild.

Thanks everyone for all your nice comments. Making lightbulb terrariums can be fun. I want to hang them all over my christmas tree. Shipping them can be tricky and my best advice is to make a kit using a hollowed out bulb and then have the recipient put it together. Airplants with sand or rocks would be an easy terrarium to make for a kit.

wimsyward says:
If you are having trouble getting the soil inside without getting it all over the glass, roll a slip of paper into a funnel/tube shape and place it in the mouth of the container. Shake the soil gently into the tube of paper. So much easier than trying to clean it all later with a paintbrush, and it takes ages for the dirt to settle on it's own-- if it ever does. :)

I am interested in bringing in some "wild" air plants from outside, but I am concerned about pests that may come along with it, too. If you are having problems with pests from outside, sounds silly, but wash your plants when you bring them in, you can use a mild detergent and sponge to do this, that will wash away eggs or critters that might be there. Isolate them and keep a watch out for any hitchhikers for a couple of weeks. If you do see something, spray with an organic spray (talk to your local plant person about products to use)

Lizette Venter from Clovetree says:
I am planning a mobile (dangling, not phone) with lots of little terrariums. As things go - lightbulbs stop working occasionally, and I've got several saved up in a box, as I'm busy replacing with energy saving bulbs - you know the ones with the coils... So here goes to not adding to landfill, and creating little green havens all over my house.
