This article is a part of Back to Basics month in April 2012. Look for more articles on these topics in the Seller Handbook and subscribe to the Etsy Success newsletter to stay in the loop!
You’ve opened your shop and listed your first item. Hooray! Well, what next? Share who you are and what sets you apart in your Public Profile. Here are five simple tips sure to help your profile (and you!) stand out from the crowd:
- Use first person. One special aspect of buying on Etsy is connecting with other people. Hit home that there is a person behind your shop by starting with “I.”
- What makes your shop special? Why should someone buy from your shop? Share your story by talking about what sets you apart.
- Talk about your process and what inspires you. Buyers love to hear the vision behind the products, so speak up!
- Add your location to your profile. This will help local buyers find you.
- Have fun and be welcoming! Use an upbeat and positive voice to make your profile sing.
For even more information on how to construct a creative, concise, well-constructed profile, check out this blog post.

It was after a chat with DanielleXO that I reworked my profile. Updating it to speaking in the 1st person (which is a challenge for me) AND, more importantly mentioning how I got my "crafting" start. Which was making colored 3D Glue Art in the 4th grade with Crayola Markers & Elmers glue - seriously! Since implementing those changes, traffic has increased AND I've had several people (customers and sellers alike) email me to say that did the very same thing as a child. Very cool! Thanks again Nickey. xo

Adriana Allen from adrianaallenllc says:
Thank you for the advice, Nickey! I think it is right on spot and I am talking from personal experience. In my profile I talk about what has meant to me to fight all my life with a severe form of Rheumatoid Arthritis that has by now almost claimed my hands and has deformed most of my joints. It was hard to share this with people as I am not someone to share any personal information to begin with and my disease has never been something I want to think about unless it reminds me of itself ever that often. The reason I shared my life story with people I don't know was to let them know how much crafts and my creative work mean to me. What this has led to is people sharing their stories with me and some unexpected friendships. So yes, I do believe your advice is very much true not only in terms of business, but also because it may lead to some unexpected and very positive surprises.

Kelly from KikuPaper says:
Using "I' throughout a text, I always feel it sounds to be self-centred, too personal and perhaps lacking objectivity - "I did this...", "I made this...", "I love ...". The reader knows your writing from your personal viewpoint. Perhaps one or two "I's" thrown in at appropriate moments is effective but the continual use of I, me, my, etc generally turns me off and I stop reading.

You can definitely be personal without just listing biographical details. Seek out something in your life experience as a creator that will resonate with people who may not know you, but who can understand and appreciate that exciting, creative experience. It's worth doing because the personal element is what draws many people to etsy. When helping a fellow commenter on this article edit her profile, I realized I need to apply such advice to my own profile. :-)

Great ideas. I will definitely incorporate more of these into my profile. I find that a profile goes a long way in terms of relating to potential buyers and appealing to their own personalities. I can't tell you how many times I have favorited a shop (and gone on to buy items from them) after reading the shop owner's profile. When you can really feel someone's emotions and passions coming through, then you know they have done a great job in constructing their profile.

Thank you for the advice. I have been selling for 10 years and letting our customers get to know me personaly. This past 2 years I have saw how people are returning to the old ways of doing business. Customers are tired of corporate shopping, they want the mom and pop store but with the convenience of modern technology, the Internet and Etsy is the doorway. In pursuit of this and for the convenience of our customers I changed our company name from TradUR to my name Glenn Furniture. This past 2 years when the worlds economy has been in peril our business has more than tripled and is still growing every day. http://glennfurniture.com Sometimes I ask my team if there is a way to photo copy myself, ha ha. But I enjoy it and working with each client to make their dream design a reality.
