Packaging Inspirations

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

HeyMichelle

Etsy sellers are renowned throughout the world for their inspired packaging. It can help your shop stand out, encourage holiday gift purchases, and make a lasting impression on customers, keeping them coming back again and again.

This post is just a taste of what sellers showed us in this packaging thread and in the Etsy Packaging Flickr pool, so check those out as well for more ideas!

Define Your Style

Your packaging is part of your branding, so let it reflect your style. What colors, materials, and patterns will help you achieve your look?
Watch: Building Your Brand

Delightful Details

The thrill of opening your thoughtful package will encourage your customer to return! What little touches will you add to delight your customer?

Selling Gifty Items

For gifty items, your packaging is part of the product and will help you stand out. Make packaging a priority if your item is mainly intended to be given as a gift.

Stamps and Block Prints

Make your own packaging with stamps and block prints. A number of Etsy sellers offer custom stamps, as well as other designs you can use to create a distinct look.

Custom Business StampsWashi Tape | Twine | Kraft Jewelry Boxes | Muslin Bags

Left: quotesandnotes. Middle, top to bottom: fruitsofmylabor, Arketypes, adorapopkittydarknessdesigns. Right: PetitPlat, Bint.

Printed Materials and Stickers

Artwork created by a designer can take your packaging to the next level. If you’re an artist, this is the perfect place to show off your skills. If you’re not, either keep it simple for now, or find an artist who can create branded materials for you.

Gift Wrap

It’s hard to tell where a lot of sellers’ everyday packaging ends and gift wrap begins! Nevertheless, the option to buy gift wrap in your shop can make that gift buyer’s decision all the easier. Be sure to read Etsy’s rules about offering gift wrap in your shop.

Read: How to Offer Gift Wrap

The Outer Package

Make sure the outer box is durable and appropriate for what you are sending. Many sellers ship in fairly simple boxes, but these are some interesting ideas for jazzing it up if you like.

Left to right, top to bottom: Glitterfarm, thewheatfield, whimsylove, CreatureRooms.

Tuck-Ins

Little somethings tucked into your package can surprise and delight your customer. Get your shop name on them somewhere, and make sure to budget them into your price.

Business cards in the shape of something useful — in this case, pencils from eszkimok and and clothespins from quotesandnotes. A coupon code for a future order from bijouvintagebazaar. Info cards from IlluminatedPerfume, which are especially useful if you received this as a gift and didn't read the description. An art thank you card and bonus buttons from bowsprite. A sample size of what you sell — here, a gift tag for the customer to use from LittlePaperDog and mini photos from TimIrving. Luscious reusable packaging from Kookery. The addition of a handmade tea bag turns Gx2homegrown's mug into a gift set.

Putting It Together

Let’s finish it off with this charming video from FlourishCafe, where she shows us her packaging process.

How do you package your items? Are you going to try something new?

  • bettesbuttons

    Bette Iverson from bettesbuttons says:

Bette from Bettesbuttons: After reading all of these posts, I guess I am from the "Old School". We sell Vintage and a lot of things are heavy and cumbersome. We recycle all we can. Our boxes come from Target where we walk in the mornings, we turn the boxes inside out so there is no advertising left. We get bubble wrap from people, we use a lot of packing tape to secure the product. We strive on fast shipping. Shipping is expensive and if we can keep the shipping price down, we do. We haven't lived into the late 70's for nothing. However, if you are selling a handmade item, it is a whole different story. Just remember--most packing is thrown away. Maybe I am still too "Old Fashioned"! Thanks for listening.

Love the personalized packaging. And, as Bette from Bettes Button says recycling is a awesome way to go especially for vintage items. Although, even with those kinds of items a little personalization, such as a handwritten card, color tissue paper or ribbon does make the opening the package a bit more attractive. Definitively these lovely touches for handmade items are a must, some very creative people out there.

Here's my question for other sellers: do you ever feel like all the packaging (time, effort, money, resources, etc) will be wasted? Even if it's a gift? I mean, I know if I order a item, I want to open it up and see it, touch it, feel it--before I give it as a gift. So then all the pretty wrapping and such is undone.... Thoughts?

I commented about my packaging already but should have added that 95% (if not more!) of my packing supplies are recycled. I save all bubble wrap, boxes, tissue paper, etc, etc, etc that can be reused in my shop to keep cost down. That leaves me a budget for ropes and twine, tags and thank you notes. So many recycled packing supplies can be refreshed with a little stamp and some ink.

I am with Bettesbuttons and Vintageeye. My focus on packaging is securing the item so that it will not be damaged and I use as little packaging as possible and and I reuse materials whenever I can. Boxes, bubble wrap, peanuts-- all saved and reused. I do love the idea of the stamp, though. That might work and add a lovely touch for a return address instead of printing on the printer like I currently do...

Packaging for me is getting a product to the buyer unharmed, dry and as inexpensive as I can. And like others expressed here, some of my items are odd size and I reuse boxes. At work, all the girls in the office save me their boxes, bubble wrap, and air pockets for reuse for these items. But most of my packages go out in waterproof poly bags. Although,I would like to work a bit on the creativity of my thank you tag. Love all the thoughts that are expressed here, beautiful ideas!

I love seeing all the ideas and the creativity that goes into packaging people's purchases! My focus on packaging is making it look good without being wasteful; re-usable; and also protective so that the package handlers don't harm the products inside. I also save boxes and cushioning materials, because those add up in cost, as well as in the landfills. I'm still working on my branding, but once I get it...oh man. ;)

I agree with the idea that "presentation is everything" and this article inspires and educates me about maintaining a brand. However, in the name of recycling and re-using there is no damage or environmental harm by using cardboard boxes that were used for something else. It should be something that is acceptable and encouraged by both buyers and sellers alike. Thank Etsy for all they do to edify the people who sell on this most excellent venue. It is a privilege and pleasure.

I also use recycled shipping packaging, padded & tyvek envelopes. If I need a box, though, I'll use something from the cupboard, like a granola bar box or cereal box. The post office probably doens't like it, but I hear form customers that it is fun & surprising to get a box of Cheerios delivered! Depending on the item inside, I'm torn on the packaging/presentation there. I agree with those above that if I'm buying a gift, I need to be able to see it first, so I often undo a lot of effort, and then re-wrap it myself. Don't go overboard!

  • LaughLand

    Anne Fraser from LaughLand says:

I am not a great fancy packaging fan. I agree with a couple of the posts here - my packaging is designed to get the parcel to the buyer as quickly, safely and inexpensively as possible. I reuse clean cardboard and boxes etc. I don't like the idea of packaging or little gifts from the seller making the item more expensive. I send many items internationally and postage from Australia is a killer. Extra packaging adds weight, which for me means it adds to the shipping cost. In fact, I would not be very happy if I bought an item and found out that some of the cost went towards a small gift I didn't particularly want or a nice box I had to throw out. I don't think packaging deserves this much attention. The me, packiaging is about show and not substance. I am more interested in the continuing value of the handmade item itself.

Love how you picked so great packaging designs. However, one could tell if they are designed only to package or to build a brand. If you wish to brand a business and appeal to a certain type of customers, I would recommend you to get a professional designer who would refine the image you wish to project. Yes it will cost some money, but you will get a return on investment for sure :)

  • kgpaintings

    Kirsten Gilmore from PaintingsByKEGilmore says:

So much to ponder here. I think the solution depends on the item you are sending. Be aware that some pretty wrapping can DAMAGE art. I use clear, 3 mil HDPE plastic instead of tissue, because tissue (or even glycine paper) can stick to dried acrylic gloss varnish, depending on the temperature. I will definitely choose substance over style if style can ruin the art. I mostly sell large, original, acrylic paintings and need them to arrive unharmed. Often, they are bought as gifts for someone else, so the buyer unwraps before gifting. I would rather pay more towards protecting the painting than wrapping something a buyer will have to unwrap to inspect before they use it as a gift. Some of the ideas on this forum sound useful and cost effective. Stamps on the outer package would work. I worry that hand drawing would look amateurish or unprofessional, even when done well. What do you think? But, if decorations are on the outer box, the buyer sees the branding, but not the gift recipient. Ribbons or ties sounds good, but they would have to be untied and retied by the buyer. Maybe moo stickers with shop-brand related images on the plastic inner wrap would work? Does anyone have ideas for fragile packages like this that need to be inspected before becoming gifts? P.S. Right now, I use a small print of a painting on cardstock, then hand write a thank you note to the buyer, sometimes including a coupon code.

Honestly, I feel like I make so little money on my sales that this sort of thing seems really depressing to me. It is all very cutesy and such. But so costly in terms of time and materials! My prices are as low as I can make them, yet I am still undersold by many others right here on Etsy. I feel like these types of ideas would only add to the cost of my items, making me significantly less competitive. The packaging does not usually show up in one's photos of our pieces anyway, so I am still wondering what the point is--at least for someone who is doing this for a living?
