Once you get a feel for the basics of pricing your items, graduate on up to the next level of pricing strategies.
Bundled Pricing. Encourage your customer to buy multiple items by offering them together as a set, usually at a slightly discounted price. Think about products shoppers are likely to want to buy together — a collection of soaps, a set of bridesmaid necklaces, a grouping of art prints. You might do a prepared set that you know will work great together, or allow the customer to choose from a chart of what you have available. Learn more: Bundling Strategies.
Tiered Pricing. Having a range of prices in your shop allows you to sell to different buyers. For shops selling higher-priced items, some simple pieces in your signature style will allow customers who don’t have the money for your high-end pieces to buy something from you. Learn more: Tiered Pricing.

Kjoo sells exquisite art jewelry for hundreds of dollars, and also offers simpler, smaller pieces in the $50 range.
Sales and Discounts. Sales can be a good way to attract new buyers to your shop and reward loyal fans. If you run sales and promotions, make sure you’re attracting the right buyers and maintaining the value of your work. This article is geared towards holiday promotions, but the tips apply across the board: Putting on a Promotion.
Wholesale Pricing. Would you like to sell wholesale? Keep in mind that your wholesale price will generally be half of your retail price (what you currently sell the item for), so plan accordingly! Learn more: Wholesale Pricing.
What pricing strategies have worked for you as your shop has grown?

Throwing a sale is such a sweet way to reward loyal fans! It's the gift that keeps on giving :) And I utilize bundled pricing because it's such an effective way to cater to brides who are on a budget, but need multiples of an item. Great practical blog post with lots of smart and helpful info!

I often try to do tiered pricing since each of my items can be made 'larger' I think it helps to justify the extra materials that go into the creation of a larger piece.

Thanks much for the sales tips! I'm a new seller on Etsy and I've been thinking about creative ways to promote my shop. Aside from a bundle price, I've often thought about giving a free gift to shoppers who spend up to a certain amount. What do you think? I make jewelry part-time. Please visit my shop nikusjewelries, I would love to know what you think about my designs. Thanks!

Great post, thank you! I have been using bundled pricing on my prints and wood photo blocks for quite some time now, both by using "you pick any xx prints- 20% off" and creating "instant collections." They have been a very successful addition to the shop as, even if someone doesn't want the exact instant collection I pulled together, they've been inspired to create their own and know that they'll get the same bundle discount :)

I have a sale just once a year and it happens to be on the day of the year that Canadians expect a sale just about everywhere -- Boxing Day, aka December 26th. I find limiting the number of sales I have encourages people to recognize the value of my work and putting a sale on a classic sale day of the year does some of the promoting for me. Great read! I need to focus more on tiered pricing!

Mekong Creative from mekongcreative says:
Rewarding loyalty with a sales price isn't necessarily wise. This trains the customer to expect discounts in the future. Rather, provide access to rare items or information that is otherwise not available. Ask the loyal customers for more information about what they like and try and incorporate their needs into future products and services. This makes them a partner rather than someone looking for a better price.

Great tips, but I wonder if there are some items that just can't be made for whole sale. I have received many requests from brick and mortar stores to carry my plushies, but I can never settle on a price that is mutually beneficial. I would either have to sell to retailers at a loss to me or charge them so much that they are unable to make a profit. Suggestions?

I am planning a sale soon! I have priced accordingly so that 20% off in the future will not be too detrimental, & I could move otherwise "stale" product. for my HandmadeHempMomma shop on etsy, I am glad that it is acceptable to just have select items on sale, like previous years work, & old stock w/o having to offer sale prices on all my hardworked handmade pieces. Thanks for the article!

I like the idea of bundling the same kind of items together (as in your example of fat quarters of fabrics for quilting) but I've also seen "kits" as in "party kits" for children's birthday parties, which include a hat for the birthday kid + 8 party pack bags + bunting, etc. So I think there are a couple of ways to do bundling, and I'll look into how I can apply them.

Sometimes I get more out of the comments than I do the blog! lol I put in a thank you card and a gift worth more than $3 with every purchase. It promotes my own creations which I also sell in my shop and I might get some feedback on how to make it better (so far, no complaints! ;)). I'm waiting for the Vintage pricing tips lab with bated breath.

So... at first, I thought you guys were nuts. Saying to raise my prices was going to drive my all but dead sales into the grave. I was killing myself trying to do everything I could to raise interest, get the word out, make at least ONE sale in May. It was frustrating, to say the least! But, I figured, you can't kill what's already dead, now can you? So I bit the bullet, raised my prices to what was actually fair and allows me to do wholesale too and to my surprise, I got 3 sales practically back to back! And the SNS I did on Sunday did NOT hurt my pockets one bit either! The customer was happy because she got a good deal and I was happy because the price she paid was still more than what I was asking just a week ago! WOW So now I'm thinking, you guys might actually know what you're talking about! I've been scouring your blogs, forums, videos and every other thing I can find about building a successful Etsy store. This blog is just another piece of the pie and I'm so grateful that you posted it! THANK YOU for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience with us. It's truly making a difference! (sorry I talk/type so much. I type faster than I can talk too. Can you believe that?! Yikes!)

I have a question for those that are more experienced. When having a sale, how do you get the word out. I put it on the little write we have above the photographs and we also change our photograph that you see, but are there others ways that we do not know about?? Also what do you do about people order something and then do not buy it or even answer your convos? Do some of you have them pay ahead for special orders?? We started last June and have enjoyed the chance to sell our art work, but sometimes feel I am stumbling around in the dark. Maybe I am not reading information somewhere. Help!!;o) Ricky

Very helpful. Thank you! If we sell sets at a bundled price, do you suggest we set that up in our shop as one listing? Right now we have the sets separated and mention the other pieces in each listing, because customers have broken up sets with their purchases in the past. Which works better?
