Over the years, Malarie of itsastitch has transformed her shop. She’s reworked her photos and tightened up her shop assortment, among many other changes. Now, as she nears her 1000th sale, she shares her tips for success.
Tell us about your journey as a seller. Where did you start, and where are you now?
I have been a crafter for as long as I can remember, but only as a hobby or gifts for friends and family. Then, a very dear friend of mine kept telling me about this wonderful website full of artists who all sell their handmade wares. This was right before the holidays, so I spent lots (and lots and lots) of time shopping and browsing the awesome collection of shops here and just fell in love, because how could you not?
Not too long after, I created this shop as a side gig, just for fun and it became something I got much more serious about over time. Initially, I was making just jewelry and tried my hand at machine sewing. After I realized that sewing machines and I are not the best of friends, I started up with embroidery, which I just fell head over heels for.
Now, my shop is a hybrid of both my original idea of jewelry, and my more current love affair with embroidery.
What changes that you made had the biggest impact on sales?
Without a doubt, having excellent photos. A simple background and soft, natural light just makes every product speak for itself. Once I simplified my photos, my sales really picked up. Not only does it look more professional, it is much more feature-friendly on and off Etsy — don’t forget that blogs and magazines and even TV shows look around on Etsy for artists to feature.
In addition to having pretty photos, showing all aspects of the product is crucial. Five photos of just a pendant isn’t what a customer wants. Show it to scale, show how it hangs, show the closure. Think about what you would want to see as a buyer.
How did you get more traffic to your shop?
Social networking helped so much. I really took to Twitter as a way to connect with customers, sellers, bloggers, etc. I like the ease and speed of it, and it feels more personal than a comment on a blog, for me. I know lots of folks that took to blogging or Facebook for networking and are total rock stars with it, definitely envious.
I also joined a few teams that I really like, both online and street. Treasury teams in particular brought a ton of traffic to my shop, and I would recommend it to anyone with a great eye for curation, it’s a lot of fun.
What steps did you take to improve your photos?
Simplify! My old stuff was, shall we say… bold. Bright, really distracting backgrounds are eye-catching for the wrong reasons. The first thing I did was stick to neutrals. White, beige, and tan backgrounds are easy on the eye and bring attention directly to what you’re selling.
After that, I started playing around with angles. I got low, experimented with some props (bowls and mugs are great for staging pretty much anything), and made my photos more interesting and clickable.
What tips do you have for getting featured? First and foremost, have an awesome product — that’s where it starts. A pretty photo will only take a mediocre product so far.
Stay on top of trends and make note of upcoming seasons/holidays. Right now, I’m working on spring and summer designs, and come early summer, I’ll be working on fall and winter. Be ready for it, don’t wait.
Keep your photos clean, fresh and simple. The most feature-able shops all have crisp, clear photos.
What are your favorite resources for learning about being successful on Etsy?
My favorite resource is other sellers. I have quite a few shops that I admire and respect deeply, and I turn to them first for advice, tips or critiques. There’s such a wealth of knowledge there, and I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t want to help. Even if you don’t know any sellers well, read Quit Your Day Job and Featured Seller articles; they are a wealth of information.
Any other words of wisdom you’d like to add?
Never stop improving and expanding your horizons. Never stop thinking about what you could tweak to make your shop even more awesome than it is. The best sellers know there’s always room for improvement — whether it be in how you present your wares, adding a new line of product into your shop, or finding a new way to connect to other people on Etsy. Times and trends are always changing.
P.S. Malarie has been making over more than her shop! We were all super-inspired by her 140 pound weight loss, which she details on her blog, along with inspirational posts to help you get moving!

One thing I have often noticed on the featured sellers is their generosity, excitement, can-do attitude, and postitive outlook in trudging forward when the going gets discourageing. Thank you Etsy for that!

to be honest, I'm not into everybody's store looking the same with the same photo style and colors and angles. Whenever I go to the treasury lists it's like there is one photographer for all of etsy? yes, they look nice but it's hard to tell the shops apart just based on the photos featured. I am not right or wrong just of a different opinion. more individuality and less follow the leader.

Thank you Malarie for the inspiring words of hope. I joined Etsy in October 2011 and haven't sold a thing but I haven't put 100% of my self into the shop. Now with the Holidays behind me I have been pulling out the boxes of art supplies that I so hastily put away so I could reclaim my dinning room for the Holidays. But now I have the over powering urge to be creativity. I can’t suppress the need to be creative any longer LOL. Look out Etsy here I come. .. Lisa Marie / Bonnets Bags Treasures. (bonnetsbagsandtreasures.com) That’s right I have been spending a lot of time figuring out how to use the Etsy site, buying a domain name and how to have the domain name take people directly to the shop at Etsy when they search web. Thanks again.

This is great advice for a new shop like mine. I know photos are huge and something that I know I need improvement on, hearing her story gives me hope that with practice i know eventually I will learn how to take nice crisp photos just as she does. I've just joined the world of social media (find it fascinating) and also a learning process.

Overwhelmed by the Etsy community! It's 6 weeks since I populated my shop and the response has been tremendous. The community and Etsy have made the process so much fun. You are right Malarie, it does show that you love what you make and love sharing it. Many thanks

This was really informative! Thanks so much for sharing your insight. As a buyer for a few years on etsy I've realized that photos are such an important part of the process and now as a new seller I'm trying to emphasize that with my shop. Thanks again and I adore the hybrid of products you sell!
