Short Stories: Grasp Bowls

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.

We wanted to know a little more about the beautiful “Grasp” pieces created by by artist Bryce Wymer and designer Farrah Sit of Flat Earth Studio. Here’s what Bryce had to say.

Hands have the arresting ability to create and engage a narrative about the human condition. Strength, weakness, embracement and frailty can all come across within just a few variations of the hands’ positioning.

In the original “Grasp Collection” concept phase, we were interested in engaging the viewer in a interactive experience. After throwing a few ideas around, we decided that hands would be the most universal storytelling element. We wanted to keep the concept slightly abstracted so the viewer can extract their own personal story from the design.

These bowls are super cool. The fact that the hands themselves are a dark color and the outlining is done with white makes them look like old Greco-Roman jugs and pottery! I think it's inadvertantly a really cool modern version of a timeless dish!

Love these! I have my degree in art history, and these bowls speak to my memory of certain ancient artifacts when I look at them. The ability the bowls have to connect the audience to a certain memory or feeling makes them true works of art - congrats to flatearthstudio for these great pieces!

Hands do tell so much and can be beautiful or gross. Mine are overworked and give away my age more than anything else. But they also show how much I work with them in my craft, in my garden and in my kitchen. They are my best most coveted tools, and even if they are vintage, they were custom made for me.
