Summer Camps for Grownups

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Does summer make you long for carefree days of dreamcatcher-making, lanyard-knotting, and God’s-eye weaving? Well, you’re not the only one. Sleepaway adult craft camps let you indulge in breathtaking nature while learning a variety of creative skills from the world’s coolest makers. The camps range from traditional rural escapes to more modern retreats, and they offer the chance to try your hand at everything from blacksmithing to food styling. Read on to find out where you should book your bunk.

John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC
Inspired by the folk schools long popular in the rural countrysides of Denmark and Sweden, this year-round mountainside creative haven opened in 1925 as a means of preserving the traditional crafts of Appalachia. You’ll find a mix of the customary skills of the old South (blacksmithing, quilting, homesteading) along with more contemporary subjects (photography, screenprinting). Cooking, calligraphy, and even storytelling are also on the schedule. Campers come for a week or a weekend, have the option of on-campus lodging or pitching a tent at the campground, and enjoy three meals a day, served family-style so you get to know your fellow creators.

Camp Winnarainbow, Laytonville, CA
More wacky than crafty (but still offering a full-on adult camp experience), Winnarainbow was founded by one of the most famous characters of ’60s counterculture: Wavy Gravy. Back then he was the official clown of the Grateful Dead, and he’s still spreading the gospel of the performing and circus arts. Spend a day, a weekend or nearly a week at Winnarainbow and you’ll have the opportunity to learn stilt-walking, trapeze, improv, ceramics, and, obviously, tie-dye. Campers stay in teepees and enjoy the Zen-inducing northern California landscape of Mendocino county.

Cabin Time 2: Bogus Lake from It’s just nice.

Cabin-Time Art Camp
Illustrator Geoffrey Holstad is the creative behind Cabin-Time art camps, which he describes as “a roaming artist residency to remote places.” And though there have only been two (in Ontonagon, MI, and Grand Marais, MN) with a third planned for August (in Lake Superior, MI), that doesn’t detract from the awesomeness of this camp. Less of a learning environment and more of a creative, collaborative wilderness getaway, Cabin-Time is for self-motivated makers looking to unplug.

Ace CampsVarious locations
Billed as “travel and educational adventures,” Ace Camps are a roving experience. Rather than offering a full schedule of different classes, each camp is led by one person focusing on a single skill. The offerings sound absolutely dreamy — sketching with Camilla Engman in Sweden; food styling and photography with Cannelle et Vanille’s Aran Goyoaga in Whistler, BC; travel writing in Hawaii with author Rolf Potts. The website alone will make you want to pack your bags and set off to make something.

SquamHolderness, NH
“Creativity as a way of life” is the tagline of this idyllic workshop. Held at an actual campsite replete with rustic cottages on the shores of New Hampshire’s Lake Squam, this camp’s four-day retreats in the fall and spring are as much about relaxing as they are about learning. Each day offers a variety of classes (knitting, embroidery, jewelry-making, writing) taught by some of the Internet’s most beloved crafters (Kayte Terry, Christine Chitnis, Jessica Marquez), but if you simply want to float in the lake, that’s cool too. You couldn’t ask for a more picturesque place to pick up a new skill.

Peters Valley Craft CenterLayton, NJ
Set among towering trees and running streams, this craft center was founded in 1970 and is still going strong, offering intensive two- to five-day workshops from May through September. The sheer number of subjects is overwhelming (the fiber arts category alone has nearly 20 classes, including ikat rug weaving and sculptural crochet), and the range of classes offers options for beginners and advanced crafters alike. Learn how to woodwork with hand tools, throw ceramics on the wheel, silversmith, or hand-carve leather while lodging in a rustic farmhouse.

North House Folk School, Grand Marais, MN
North House takes its inspiration from Danish folkeshoskoles and emphasizes Scandinavian crafts. Old-school traditions like broom making and chair caning are taught year-round as well as boatbuilding and basket weaving. This Folk School also focuses on sustainable living, so eco-conscious campers will dig their workshops on gardening, herbal healthcare, beekeeping, and solar oven building. Foodies are in luck: cooking classes include pickling, sausage making, preserving, and pie baking. Nestled on the shore of Lake Superior, the school’s setting is too small to accommodate housing, though a campsite within walking distance maintains its camp-like feel.

Fascinating! I didn't know these sorts of camps even existed. Where I live, there are so many kids camps that it seems almost out of place to imagine adults partaking, but knowing that these camps exist and are places to learn new crafts and skills, I'm amazed! Sign me up!

If you are looking for something less campy but easy to fit into a busy schedule, look into the Roycroft Campus Workshops in East Aurora, NY: http://www.roycroftcampuscorporation.com/results.php?category=9. They have courses in printmaking, metalworking, painting, taught by Roycroft Artisans in the beautiful newly rebuilt Power House. You can stay in the historic (but pricey) Roycroft Inn on the campus, or in nearby hotels,B&B's, or camping. East Aurora is an incredible art town, and not too far from NYC, Toronto, or the Midwest.

I actually went to John C. Campbell last fall with my sister and daughter. My sister and I, in our 50's, took a great silversmithing course, and over the course of a week learned to saw, solder, drill, polish, etc. It was pretty intense, long days, often going back to the studio after dinner until the wee hours. My daughter took a traditional music/ballad singing/playing course and her group performed at the show and tell on the last day. The surroundings are totally bucolic, the food good and plentiful, the accomodations adequate. I will say that it can be a lot of pressure even in a 'beginner' course to try and complete projects but the instructors are great and they have a ton of things to choose from. We would do it again!

God I hated camp when I was a kid! All I wanted was a summer alone to read and make things. But a week-long art intensive? That's a camp I could get behind! As long as I can stay in a hotel, that is :)

This post makes me miss my childhood - - my brothers and I spent several weeks each year in "summer school" where we took electives like puppet-making and dance, and at least two weeks every summer (thanks to my grandma Viva) at summer camp. I raised my kids in a foreign country without those options, so they never knew the joys of summer camp. I'd LOVE to go back to camp as a grownup, expecially if I could take my now-grown-up-kids with me!

Sounds like a great time...if I were rich and retired, I'd go try them all! but summer here in Tampa Bay is humid and hot, afternoon thunderstorms, and we mostly stay inside where it's comfortable in the a/c. My summer 'art camp' is in my studio making things for Christmas! But I remember going to "summer enrichment" at our local middle school when I was a kid, and how fun it was to do arts & crafts, ceramics, etc. Always my favorite thing to do. Anyway someday I'd love to go to some of these camps. Enjoyed the blog!

My man and I are moving to the site of our "sleep-away camp" this September. We're calling it a "retreat centre", but it will be "sleep-away" and include lots of making (including a hot glass studio, eventually), warrior training and natural movement, and various specific workshops for arts, self-cultivation, etc.... I am TOTALLY into this way of learning- full-immersion intensive. It's how I learn any new skill on my own, too. :) In our gorgeous, completely off-grid, natural landscape a few minutes from the warm beach is even better! Great spotlight on this idea. I really love it! <3

summer is such a fun, dirty time for me and the kids: building forts, messy ice cream, lots of water in and out of the pools, and just plain FUN!!!

I was at the John Campbell Folk school in 1981...homesteading week! Those were the days. I was enrolled in a year long homesteading program that wound up being cancelled due to enrollment issues. I often wonder what course my life would have taken if I had stayed in Brasstown for a year! Great camp ideas...I'd love to try all of them. Thank you for the sharing.

I love this article! I grew up going to camp and I very much think that it shaped the person I am today. The motto of camp was "learning to live together". I would love to go to an adult camp! If any camps need a water ski or yoga instructor, I CAN DO THAT!

Hilton Head, SC is one of my favorite beaches. So clean and peaceful. Quite a relaxing time with plenty of nice restaurants, spas, bike trails, kayaking, and so much more.

You forgot to mention Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina – a beautiful and magical place with an amazing community of makers and instructors from all over the world. Penland is probably the biggest of these types of schools with the largest offerings of classes. Also, many of these other schools were modeled after Penland. I'll be teaching a one-week all levels enameling class this October at Penland. http://www.penland.org/classes/fall/fall_1.html

I have been to the John C. Campbell Folk School many times for Jewelry and Metalworking classes! The skills I learned there are reflected throughout my shop; and after my Work/Study Student session living at the school and taking classes, I moved approx 5 minutes down the road. It is a magical place like no other. everyone should visit at least once :)
