Brooklyn-based illustrator Sophie Blackall was in search of inspiration when she stumbled upon the infamous Missed Connections section of Craigslist. In this Internet realm of love lost and found, anonymous posters chronicle the one who got away, hoping that the object of their affection will remember the shy stranger who offered an umbrella during a freak hail storm. Sophie immediately knew she had found her muse. That fateful revelation led to a collection of tender works, culminating in her recently published book, Missed Connections: Love, Lost & Found.
Many of the illustrations for the book originated in New York City’s subway system. In a perfect bookend to her own story, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Arts for Transit program asked Sophie to design their latest Art Card — a prominent piece of subway art featured in most of the city’s newest subway cars. Her wonderful illustrations, featuring some of the characters in her book, can now be seen on lines in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, as subway riders make and miss connections, for all of 2012.

This brings me back to my childhood riding the ferries, trains, buses & subways of NYC. I made up stories about many of my fellow riders back then & seeing this makes me feel as though they have come to life. Brilliant work!

Awesome! I just love the idea of art in public spaces & the art concerned is so detailed & fascinating I could while away a long journey gazing at it &making up my own stories! I've been a huge fan of Sophie's Missed Connections since I stumbled ontothem by chance. The whole idea of the posts on Craigslist is so bitter-sweet... so many missed chances, so many "what if"s... a world of infinite possibilites, with people focussing on the opportunites they lost, the people they just managed not to connect with. I hope it teaches us all to seize the moment, smile at strangers & really interact with the people around us.

Sophie Blackall is haunting me!! Shortly after I had the idea to do a major series based on Missed Connections, I discovered her work and cried because my idea had already been executed so beautifully by someone else. But why wouldn't it be? Missed Connections posts are such a wealth of inspiration. I went through with the project anyway: http://kaylajenkins.com/missedconnections ...but her work has been following me ever since. It's even there on my daily commute on the F train now! Such a perfect fit for the MTA's Arts for Transit posters--I just wish I could enjoy looking at it without feeling such fierce jealousy! Wonderful video, made me want to go somewhere and ride a suway to some magical place. It's also wonderful to realize that there are others out there reading the missed connections on Craigslist and seeing these fabulous stories take place but by putting them to paper as Sophie has makes me feel all gooey inside. Thank you!

I love Art in the subways. I totally appreciate this & will definitely buy the book & subscribe to her blog! Last time I really really liked the NYC subway art I looked up the artist & found they had written books. Subway Chicks (2004) Tanen/Hagen. It portrays tiny yellow chicks celebrating the opening day of the subway. http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/artwork_show?149 I loved it so much I bought and sent "Hatched" as gifts to expecting mother friends & bought "Appetite for Detention" for myself. I have to get the entire collection! Thanks for making that much more enjoyable! P.S. I love to read Missed Connections (sometimes I wonder if someone will be wishing they had talked to me!) ha : )

I rode the trains for 25 years when I lived in NYC. It was my preferred way of travel even once I could afford the occasional taxi. Even in the Summer, there is something about the putrid smell of the subway that is comforting. There is a comfort in being in such close quarters, with so many people of different shapes, sizes, ages, backgrounds, and all experiencing the same thing, if even for a fleeting moment. I am looking so forward to this book! Thank you!

If you love someone, set them free. If they are meant to be yours they will without a doubt come back. Not a huge fan of the missconnection ramble. With the time one uses to write it, edit it then post it, I'd rather see them climbing a new mountain or something.

Love this! Great inspiration. I'll enjoy the art on my daily 5 stop commute. My missed connection (passing on the street for years) turned into the love of my life when meeting years later at a mutual friend's 2 year old's birthday party, we couldn't take our eyes off each other from across the room... In the spirit of true love everywhere on valentines day, your true connection could be right around the corner

What medium does she use specifically. I can see watercolor...but what type of ink. I'm really interested in doing more with illustration, but I never know what type of ink to use. Thanks!

Sophie, what talent you have. I wish I could visit NYC and ride the subway - just once. I liked the video a lot etsy produced. I think etsy is a tremendous asset to the internet and you have inspired others to be a great illustrator as well. I truly enjoy coming to etsy to find these gems and am happy to be apart of such a collaboration of talent on etsy. Let's keep it that way.
