Kate Miss is a freelance graphic designer, photographer, jewelry designer, and blogger living in Los Angeles, CA. Her blog, For Me, For You, is a lifestyle and personal photo blog, and she sells her handmade jewelry under the same name on Etsy. She is equal parts cat lady and plant lady and spends an unmentionable amount of time scouring Etsy for the perfect ceramic vessels for her plants (the cat doesn’t appreciate anything but cat food).

While I’m not a die-hard Valentine’s Day kind of girl these days, I still  remember the thrill of passing out valentines in elementary school — each containing carefully chosen conversation hearts meant to express my secret love for certain boys in my class. “Will he understand that I’m totally not kidding that he’s my ‘true love’?” I’d wonder, butterflies dancing in my stomach. My days of sugar confessions may be over, but it’s still a bit thrilling to give my real true love a little something on Valentines Day day — or my BFF, because she deserves a little love as well.

There isn’t anything wrong with giving your lady a mail-order bouquet of flowers on V-Day (honestly, not many girls can deny that getting flowers at work feels pretty awesome), but you can avoid a last minute 1-800-Flowers situation with a beautiful handmade or vintage gift, which is guaranteed to impress her even more.

 

For Boyfriends

Guys can be tricky, but I think giving them something they might not buy for themselves is always a winning idea. Personally, I walk a fine line between mushy and practical for my guy; however, you can always include a ridiculously sappy handmade card to fulfill your Valentine’s Day duty to make him roll his eyes a bit (even if he thinks you didn’t see it).
