Congrats on your first sale! This article will guide you through fulfilling your order. Here’s what to do (after you finish your happy dance):
1. Communicate. Send your buyer an Etsy Conversation to thank her for her order. If she paid with check or money order, let her know you’ll ship once it clears.
If a customer (or potential customer) writes to you, it’s always a good idea to respond quickly. This shows that you are on the ball!
2. Make a pretty package. Etsy sellers are known for sending thoughtful packages. Since this is your first sale, you may not have a ton of materials, but even a piece of tissue paper can make all the difference. Tuck in a thank-you card with a hand-written note (you can DIY this out of a scrap of pretty paper). Tuck in a business card if you have one. If not, remember to write your Etsy shop name somewhere on your thank-you card. Check out these DIY packaging ideas for some inspiration!
3. Ship quickly. Your buyer is anxiously awaiting her package! Impress her by shipping the item as quickly as possible.
4. Mark as shipped. Note that you’ve shipped the item on your Sold Orders page. If you have a tracking number, you can include it in the Shipping Notification, an option that appears after you mark the item as shipped.
5. Leave feedback. Once the transaction is complete, thank your buyer with positive feedback and a friendly comment.
Many new sellers wonder how to get a customer to leave feedback. Many buyers don’t leave feedback, so be patient! However, here is a little trick to improve your chances: When you first write to the customer, include a line like, “I want you to be completely satisfied! Please let me know if there are any issues or questions with your order. If you’re pleased with your purchase, please feel free to leave me feedback.” Include a link to the Feedback page, and voila!
Have questions? Write to us and we’ll be happy to help!

Great tips, I also add a coupon code for discount on a further sale when I let the buyer know I've got their order. Just as a little thank you

Great advice Michelle! A handwritten thank you note and thoughtful packaging definitely goes a long way - I think it's so important for customers to feel special when they receive their order! Those personal touches are what handmade is all about. Using the same care and attention to detail in the presentation of your work, as used while crafting it, sets you apart and reinforces your professionalism with buyers.

Wonderful ideas! Just don't "pretty-up" the outside, though. I recently had a package torn open and the item stolen because I made the outside look as nice as the inside. My post office actually told me to keep the outside packaging very nondescript. Passing on a tip I learned the hard way.

Very good advice, especially #1. I've had 55 sales, but I still feel the same excitment everytime I see the words "Etsy Transaction" in my inbox. I always send my customers a thank you convo, but I've bought items from some sellers (both on and off Etsy) who didn't acknowledge the order at all, they just shipped it. Sometimes I had no idea whether or not they even recieved the order until it showed up in my mailbox. I am more likely to be a repeat customer if the seller sends a thank you.

Well, putting the feedback link in the convo to the customer is something I would never do. I think you may never, in any way, push a customer to give you feedback. I would be very pleased when Etsy would do away with feedback. It is a useless feature. And I think a lot of our customers don't mind about feedback at all, because most of them don't leave it for us.

I think feedback is very important. I make a point of leaving it for every purchase I make. I also want to see other peoples feedback when I'm looking to buy. I liked when you were able to track feedback to the buyer, because some people are just difficult shoppers. Doing away with feedback would make me very nervous about shopping at stores I know nothing about and I would probably stop buying off etsy. I think stores that give a little extra, like nice packaging and business cards, make people give their little extra too by leaving feedback.

Interesting that it's assumed the buyer is female, I guess it's more likely but I get plenty of male customers. As most of my items have to survive a transatlantic flight, I think safe & secure packaging is more important than prettiness. I'm also not certain about hassling buyers for feedback, despite the fact that it's the only way for sellers to build up a reputation & often the only way we have of knowing when an item's arrived. I do find it odd though when people take the trouble to write me a thank you note but don't bother with feedback. And after more than 1000 sales here on Etsy, I STILL do a little happy dance each & every time! :-)

Another additional suggestion for ongoing sales: If something goes wrong such as item was accidentally sold at another location, it was damaged before sending or that you got busy and forgot to send it, always admit the truth to the customer. Customers can deal with all kinds of things if the seller is forthright, appologizes for the inconvenience and offers to put it right in some sort of way. Even if the circumstance cannot be corrected, the seller will know that you are acting with honesty and integrity. I have had amazing experiences on Etsy even when things didn't go just right. There was only one exception. That seller didn't send out the order for over a month and then only when contacted by me wondering where my order was. When it arrived the post mark was clear that it had not been sent. There was no email or note of appology or any other communication. I like their shop and would have bought more from them even with them having forgotten the order if only they had communicated/appologized for their mistake when it was noticed. Great customer service isn't always about when things go well, it is about how do you continue great customer service when things don't go well. How you answer can lead to loyal customers who tell others or customers who are disappointed in their experience and tell others. Thanks for the great post!

Great article with some great tips. I always always make a point of thanking someone for their order rightaway in a separate convo and thanking them for any enthusiasm they have shown for my work. I always send a dispatch note with details of mail service used and date of dispatch as soon as item is shipped. When I ship, I include a very small "freebie" with a litttle preprinted colourful slip saying "Thankyou. Here is a little something extra for you from Kitsch Creations" (they took about 2 mins to produce in Word but have made ever so many of my customers comment). I include mini business cards which weigh less so cost less to post and when a customer leaves feedback I send a convo to thank them. All time consuming but well worth it :)

This is great for shops that are new, great insight. We make such big items and there is so much detail and effort into a "heavy items", YOU HAVE TO A GOOD JOB IN PACKING, this has caused some issues in shipping dates...or ETA. remember ETA, stands for "Estimate time of arrival" not, " Exact time of arrival". Shipping companies can drag things out or lose items...spend the money...get it insured. Beat down FedEX and UPS, to get your rates down...remember forceful, not threatening.... get more down that way. Postal service, use stamps.com and find discount codes when available. Don't ever build a stock item that you can't duplicate, yourself or sell something that you can't make. You set yourself up for problems. Do not knock off, fellow ETSY shops...that's just BAD business and Karma will catch up with you...I know, there are few out there trying to do knock off of my items...Play your Game, not others...you know what you are good at, then do it.. Everything in the article is true, just keep in mind of things that is not normal and is different , make sure to give yourself a buffer for time, before you give an ETA...trust me, I have pulled off enough late nights into the early AM, to meet a guide time....it sucks. But you have to say what you mean and do what you said. If something happens, then let your customers know, right away(VERY IMPORTANT). Make a 30 day planner, your best friend...It's always looks better, to view the hill as downhill, then look up the hill...the hard work has been done, Getting there. Do not bite off more you can chew, if can't do it...just say no...you'll sleep better at night. We all need to remember, we sell quality, not quantity. We make our items and we stand behind them, sometimes things don't work out, if we keep our customers in mind and make it right, then they will have faith in us,artisans and craftsman on this site. Our customers want a product with value and we want a value on our products...this what America was founded on, Let's do it again. -Gabe

I'll build stuff in North Carolina, made from items in backyard and my customers choose me, over places. They know it's made by me and my wife, and it's here in the states. What customer decides or what a Etsy wants to do, like I say, I play my own game...I'll do the best of what I got...Just like making items of reclaim wood, you take what you get and make the most out of it.

I think its important to mention, someone might have already done so, that yes, a pretty package is great, but it has to be sturdy as well :) (that sounded well rude) I always try to make sure that my cards and artwork arrive in the condition that they leave... this can sometimes affect the aesthetics of a package, sometimes :)

I love buying on Etsy, because it's like getting a gift in the mail! I have recycled packaging, but I still make sure to make it nice and fun for my customers to open, and I also include business cards with thanks and a coupon code for return customers :) I have been getting a lot of buyers that are new to Etsy and they aren't leaving feedback, but I don't push for it - a lot of times I just simply send them a message making sure they got their items in one piece and that they love it and I usually get a great reply back, which is sufficient and makes me incredibly happy!

great tips. i still remember my first sale! it was quite emotional for me that someone purchased my handmade item who lives overseas. i love gift wrapping. so i always package my items carefully with some reasonably inexpensive paper or whatever available at home and try to make it as personal as possible for each customer. it seems that many customers like to receive well-packaged goods with handmade touch.

instead of the thank-u-card i could bake a thank-u-cake for my first buyer! ¬ because i would like to please hers/his palate but because of the element of surprise! when that cake mixes with the purchased item during shipment and arrives as such to an address looking like an unidentified bunch of something, customer could be pleased with the purchased only when she/he washes it. SURPRISE! xD

Thanks for the tips.. We've had our first sale and are awaiting our next. I was super excited when I logged in to show someone my newest listing and saw we had gotten a sale. I couldn't wait to call my friend who is my business partner and tell her. She was the *happy dance* person of the group. There are a couple of things here that we hadn't thought of. We did include a small special thank you gift in with the purchased item. The link to the feedback page is a nice idea and the reminder to mark as shipped. I did forget to do that until later although I had already convo'ed the buyer to let them know it had been shipped the next day after she placed her order. That *now what?* feeling definitely hit me too, but I used the help pages to navigate me through the next steps with ease. I look forward to putting your tips to use with our next sale.. Wishing everyone the best of luck with your Etsy Shop.

Smart tips! I'm sure a lot of sellers have also bought things from other sellers, so keep in mind what you've seen sellers do in terms of a note/packaging in your purchases that stood out and use those tricks! Wrapping a package in colorful tissue paper and maybe a small ribbon really "upgrades" a package without adding much to the cost.

vintage1955 from vintage1955 says:
These tips are so important for new and established Etsy shops, as well. It is sometimes easy for well-seasoned shops to become complacent by forgetting that it is the personal touches that really make a difference in a sale and personal touches can go a long way in the world of Etsy. Lately I have noticed that a copy of the receipt of sale has not always been ncluded with my purchases. I personally always include a copy of the sale (order) in each package that I mail. It is easy to print a copy via Etsy or Paypal and it is a great way for customers to reference items purchased and the Etsy shop name. It is also a courtesy for buyers that are purchasing for business purposes. A personal handwritten note on the receipt along with an artful pocket or envelope always adds that extra touch that the buyer notices upon opening his or her box. Thanks for this post and all of the other great comments from Etsy shop owners that care about first and lasting impressions! Bravo!

Yes!!! I just had my first sale and was so excited! I did a fast communication, since I was going to make the item, and replied when I shipped and how long it will take. Communication is the KEY to success. Since shipping will take 10-14 days, not my choice, I wanted the buyer to be sure that their item was on the way and was very happy that they chose MY item to buy :-)

Unfortunately, my first customer was a scam. I had been warned previously on other sites about selling artwork and the scam artists who try to prey on first time sellers. I had set up shop, my paypal account, had listed that I was doing business within the lower 48 states because my work is large and that the shipping was free via UPS ground. The person emailed via my personal email, wanted to make a quick transaction. Claimed she was a Merchant Marine and didn't have direct access to her bank account, but wanted to make the transaction vis credit card which I had chosen not to do and wanted me to work with her own shipper. Meaning that she would have them pick it up and ship it before the transaction cleared. She was not listening or understanding anything I said. Spoke very broken English, yet claimed her name was Tanya Gibson. I refused to do business with her and flatly told her that I thought there was something shady about her business practices. I am in recovery from a TBI Traumatic Brain Injury and the business end of this is a real challenge for me, but I was aware enough to know that this was a serious case of scam. So I have temporarily pulled my paintings out of my store. I am trying to come up with something less valuable so I don't have to put up with the likes of Tanya Gibson.

Also if you don't hear back from someone after you shipped the item it makes me nervous. I really want to know if they liked their purchase or if they have any thought for improvement. Have only gotten one feedback after 6 purchases. Guess I'll have to include the link and also ask. I have also been told its not bad to ask the worst someone can say is no. For instance I just sold an item and the next day started a sale on my page. Customer Satisfaction is my main concern.

I informed the customer, I would get an estimate and take it to the post office in the morning. Turns out my estimate was way off. It cost $71.85 to overnight. I only charged her $40 for shipping. I incurred the additional money.
