More and more, big-box retail experiences are becoming impersonal, frustrating, and even dangerous — pepper-sprayed while shopping? Many online shopping venues focus purely on price and convenience. On Monday, November 28, 2011, Etsy sellers sold a record amount of goods, resulting in a single-day sales record for the community. Today, the community is on track to meet that number again, and we expect that more days will top the charts before the end of the year. We’re excited about this growth because it reflects the success of hundreds of thousands of businesses run by real people. In fact, the number of shops with sales on Cyber Monday increased by 61 percent compared to last year, and average sales per shop increased 11 percent.
Reports for the retail industry have indicated that, on average, Cyber Monday sales for 2011 were up anywhere from 15 to 30 percent over last year. For the Etsy marketplace overall, sales increased by more than 80 percent over 2010, and the rate of growth in the past year significantly exceeded the rate from 2009 to 2010.
Additionally, more than 15 million visitors came to the site between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, representing a strong surge in shoppers looking for handmade, personal gifts this holiday season and a vote of confidence for the values that Etsy represents.
More shoppers than ever are using Etsy’s mobile products and the growth in sales driven by mobile has been spectacular. Over Thanksgiving weekend, millions of people visited Etsy shops via mobile devices, almost 350 percent higher than last year’s traffic, and that number continues to climb. We’re thrilled that shoppers and sellers are using mobile devices and new products like our iPhone app to interact and connect, anywhere they are, any time they want to.
This holiday season, at a time when many people are struggling and some are even questioning the very foundations of our economy, Etsy provides an alternate vision of commerce, one where people matter most. Thank you for working with us to make this vision a reality.

Etsy could be making so much more if they would: 1. Allow a limited account guest checkout. 2. Return the scrolling most recent items to the top of relevancy. 3. Great to hear so many people did well, but there are a lot of folks whose sales figures have dropped through the floor since the introduction of shop local, many US customers just aren't seeing what's available internationally unless they are fully aware of how the search function works. Relevancy also has had a detrimental effect on my sales, many top sellers are sadly turning to other selling venues. I love Etsy and am glad to be here but I do worry for the future.

This year so far it was also my busiest weekend but Cyber Monday was my busiest day. I think overall Cyber Monday is becoming the new Black Friday.

I'm happy for those who are having success. For the number of listings I can be happy with my one sale which came on Tuesday so probably didn't have much to do with the big promo's. ETSY has been enjoyable and interesting for me this year. I've "stumbled" upon so many great shops and people and have been doing and will do more of my OWN shopping for family & friends thru-out the year and years to come. People are exceptionally nice and very polite too! Such a sweet experience! thanks community!

However, once again, I notice that the thanks is to the handmade community: Additionally, more than 15 million visitors came to the site between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, representing a strong surge in shoppers looking for handmade, personal gifts this holiday season and a vote of confidence for the values that Etsy represents. Is this because all of the sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday were for handmade goods? Just wondering why vintage isn't mentioned regarding sales and growth. Thanks Etsy!

That is great news for Etsy! Personally, I'm SO frustrated- Etsy has gotten too big for me and I feel invisible somedays. I'll be closing my Etsy shop at the end of this month and moving to another venue. I'm happy that I was able to build my business up to a level where I can take it elsewhere. I am really happy to hear that so many people are successful here though! That really is Fantastic!!

This is good news for Etsy. My shop has done pretty well, but I am noticing a very different tone from brand new buyers who haven't purchased handmade goods or done business before on Etsy. Sellers should be aware that many internet shoppers are unused to the turnaround involved in hand crafted goods, and since so many are purchasing on their mobile devices, they don't see the entire text of listings. These newcomers' expectations are typical of department store buyers, so keep in mind that they might become irritated with and abusive to sellers in a similar way they might treat retail clerks. Most buyers are lovely, but all it takes is one or two to spoil your pleasure in making handmade goods.

This whole year has been a year of change and has been challenging, fun and rewarding. I started last Sept, so things were slow because I was new last year, this year has been amazing and so many repeat customers throughout the whole year. I know 2012 will be even better. i don't know why everyone is complaining about shop local. I am in Australia and most of my sales are from US so shop local is clearly not having an impact for me. My sales have been huge. I think it proves that people are looking for a real experience in shopping and customer service instead of the big box experience and are even willing to pay a little more for that. And most who shop here are looking for handmade, unique, and maybe even something custom just for them. This has been my first holiday season here and I have been very happy...but am hoping to do even better next year. But I realize that depends mostly on me...what I offer in my shop and the customer service I provide. Etsy provides the tools for me to promote and make that happen....thanks Etsy.....

Etsy ROCKS! I saw a few people with sad issues and I say to them, "put on your big boy/girl pants and get going!" I love Etsy...i sleep less since I discover it!! I was so happy when i sold my first item, it was two days after I opened the shop...And than i began spending more and more time here. It is like my virtual home , LOL

I am so glad that sales were up, but alas I have only three sales so far ( I have been on Etsy a long time ), two to my Son ans one to Australia recently. Could somebody do me the honour of looking at my shop and give me some critique on what is wrong with it. I need/want to stay with Etsy, but at the moment I can not see the point. Sorry for the downer. Leo
