Recently, I happened upon the Dalai Lama’s Nobel Lecture in 1989, delivered upon his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize. As I was preparing for my trip to Berlin later this week for Hello Etsy (with stops in London and Dublin), his words reminded me of one of the reasons traveling in other countries warms my spirit:
“When I meet people in different parts of the world, I am always reminded that we are all basically alike: we are all human beings. Maybe we have different clothes, our skin is of a different colour, or we speak different languages. That is on the surface. But basically, we are the same human beings. That is what binds us to each other. That is what makes it possible for us to understand each other and to develop friendship and closeness.”
The Dalai Lama’s words also made me think of what I see happening every day in the Etsy community. Etsy is a truly global community that represents people in 150 countries around the world, speaking a variety of languages, and the company has staff in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Australia, Japan, and the UK. I wrote about our Etsy in German preview last week, and today, we’re taking a major leap forward by beginning to open up Etsy in German to everyone.
Many companies on the web today build separate sites when they launch in another country. At Etsy, we will remain a single marketplace with local features to make it simple for those who live anywhere in the world or speak another language to be a part of one global community. For German speakers, we’re offering a fully translated site, tools for sellers to create and manage shops and listings in German, and search features that help German-speaking buyers find unique items on Etsy from all over the world. To experience Etsy in German and to learn more about the specific features, follow these instructions.
Last week, when I dropped into the Forums and asked for community feedback for my upcoming talk at Hello Etsy, “Finding Your Courage,” the response was a testament to the “friendship and closeness” of online communities like Etsy that transcend international borders. Our members interact and build friendships with people all over the world, every day. As Matt of mattjohnsondesigns noted in his post: “I have been ‘favorited’ by people in Berlin, Boston, New York, LA, London, etc. This would have been impossible (or would have taken years) had I not joined Etsy.” As Etsy continues to grow around the world, we will continue to build the community in a way that encourages interaction among people, regardless of where they live or what language they speak.
Thanks to everyone who was so generous with their stories and their feedback on the topic. We’ve come a long way together in the past six years, and we are just getting started delivering Etsy in the languages that people speak all over the world. I hope to see some of you at Hello Etsy in Berlin!
Chad

I ship all over the world now and to think, I was so timid about it at first. From being unemployed to being back in business (almost full time) in such a relatively short period of time from when I first opened my shop here is a testament to Etsy as a great venue for individuals and small groups to make their businesses here worldwide businesses.

Welcome to Etsy, Germany! I have to say Chad, I really love the fact that Etsy has remained a single marketplace that is inclusive and growing all the time. Crafty sites in other countries don't allow non-resident sellers. Etsy is opening more doors to increase international visibility, and I love it! I just had my first sale to a photographer in Norway, and a few convos from other international etsians inquiring about custom work. I bought something from England recently, and have favorited quite a few items from other international sellers. I love our global community here. I've made some great friends I wouldn't have met otherwise. Have a great time in Germany! (Too bad your visit didn't coincide with Oktoberfest.)

Etsy is a magical place for me. I've been here two years and until now I can not believe how the world has shrunk. I meet people here from around the world and everyone is very welcoming. Amazing ... I deal with sewing for 25 years and see how I made a big step forward for two years. I sewed "to wardrobe" and probably would have been if not for Etsy

I came here to show my works the wider audience. That's what really matters - if you know that other people love your work, you do your hobby with satisfaction. Better, you can find here people who have similar ideas! I love recycle things, I love everything DIY, so I love to see such other people works. That inspires me.

The wide reach of Etsy has been wonderful for my shop, too. Recently, a new home furnishings store in Antwerp, Belgium ordered a nice collection of my work and has started representing me. They found me on Etsy. There's no way I would have been seen by them and many others in Europe, Asia, Australia, etc. except for Etsy's wide appeal and how hard you work to make it easy for those in other countries to navigate our site. Thank you.

I just noticed the new "German" language option for my shop. I was searching the blog looking for answers to some questions I have, but I don't seem to be finding them. At first I enrolled in German, but quickly realized that I have to translate every single aspect of my shop separately in a language I am completely unfamiliar with, so I unenrolled. I would love to have some light shed on this new feature. I think it's fantastic, but I just don't see how it will work for me...seems to take a ton of extra effort when I'm already spending a lot of time as it is. If you could just enroll and everything automatically translated without having to do anything else, I could see it being a feasible move to reach my international clients. Thanks Etsy for being awesome!
