Upcycling
On Saturday, December 16th, The Bazaar Bizarre craft show kicked off in Boston and LA. To honor this occasion Etsy has teamed up with its organizers to hold a special contest. The winner will receive airfare, hotel accommodations and a free booth at the next Bazaar Bizarre, inside the Maker Faire in San Francisco. This event is scheduled for: Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds (2495 S. Delaware Street, San Mateo, California 94403).
The Contest:
The word Upcycling was coined by William McDonaugh and Michael Braugart in their book on ecologically intelligent design, Cradle to Cradle. In the simplest terms, upcycling is the practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value. In this contest we challenge all Etsy users to create an object to sell on Etsy that is comprised of materials that would have otherwise ended up in the trash heap.
Entries will be judged by the organizers of The Bazaar Bizarre and by the Etsy team. The winners will be chosen on account of their ingenuity, originality and usefulness of their product.
The Rules:
- Entries must be comprised of materials that would have otherwise been thrown away or recycled. New adhesives and fasteners are permitted if required
- Entries must be placed for sale on Etsy by January 15, 2007 and tagged with upcycleBB. This is very important because it is the only way we will be able to find all the entries.
- Up to 3 entries per seller/shop.
The Prizes:
- First Prize is a trip to San Francisco, CA, and three nights hotel. We will cover these costs up to $1000. If we can afford it, you can bring a friend along too. Also included is a free booth at next year’s Bazaar Bizarre held at the Maker Faire
- Second Prize is a free booth at next year’s Bazaar Bizarre held at the Maker Faire
- Third prize, of which there will be three, is an Etsy gift pack full of t-shirts posters, buttons, a copy of Greg Der Ananian’s book Bazaar Bizarre: Not Your Granny's Crafts!, a copy of Leah Kramer's The Craftster Guide to Nifty, Thrifty, and Kitschy Crafts: Fifty Fabulous Projects from the Fifties and Sixties and all sorts of other fun stuff.

About The Bazaar Bizarre:
Bazaar Bizarre began in 2001 in the Boston-area as a hodge-podge of friends and acquaintances cobbling together their handcrafted DIY wares to sell and staging an offbeat entertainment extravaganza. Last year's event drew over 3,500 people who shopped (and rocked!) 'til they dropped. In its sixth year, Bazaar Bizarre will rock Boston, Los Angeles and Cleveland in sister events that promise to be the events of the season. Bazaar Bizarre also expanded to San Francisco in an event in the spring of 2006.
