Hi everyone,
Thanks for starting this thread. Just to clarify a couple of things:
- All items in Polyvore ALWAYS link back to where they were clipped from. Unfortunately, we don't always have the CORRECT link. We are working on improving this so that more items link back to the CORRECT page (If you are interested in the technical reason, please read the bottom of this post).
- We have temporarily blocked submissions from Etsy while we work on these issues. We know that Polyvore is useful to some of you and we'd like to restore Etsy submissions once we have worked out some of the kinks.
- We are planning on running Etsy promotion on Polyvore once these issues are resolved. I will post an announcement here once we have more details.
In the meanwhile, if your products have found their way into Polyvore against your wishes, just let us know by dropping us a line at copyright [at] polyvore [dot] com. If you want your products to be listed, please stay tuned...
Thanks,
Pasha
Technical explanation of why some Etsy items don't correctly link back: if you visit a Etsy product page and click on the product image, you get a browser popup with the large version of that image. The images imported to Polyvore are being clipped from this page instead of the original product page. We are not blaming Etsy for this whatsoever (other sites have a similar behavior), this is just the explanation of why it was happening. We actually would like to link back to the correct page (that is part of the reason we built Polyvore) but the clipping tool is not perfect in dealing with every situation (yet). |

thank you for the heads up Pasha. I have been using the site for a month and am sad that I can't add anymore of my Etsy photos for now. But I sympathize with those who did not know their images were being used. |

Pasha, I hope another change you'll work towards is automatically adding the shop name and address -- in addition to a link back to an item page -- to all images taken from Etsy.
I discovered the problem you brought up on my own. (at least) One of my images that was taken without permission and added to your site was from an image popup window, so no link was ever directed back to me.
But because of the way Etsy is set up, if a user has an item in edit mode or it expires, the link to that item page is null & void. There's no way to trace that back to a seller here.
Another reason for wanting my name on every page is that it allows ME to find my work when I search technorati, or if I have a Google hit. That allows me to thank users who've promoted my work in appropriate ways, and to contact Polyvore for removal of my work when it's abused. |

Kate can you please expound upon my question?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
More confused than EVER.
Okay please someone who works in ephemera/collage...
What is the difference in reworking old books, mags, comics? Do you have permission from the original photographer/artist/model or publication to reuse or alter their images for your profit?
Isn't it virtually the same game as polyvore? Making a collage. Only at least they aren't selling the polyvores for profit.
Seriously what came forst the chicken or the egg? |
matteart says: The attack from the whole of etsy was a little much I think. That is just my opinion I have been wrong hundreds of thousands of times.
