Original Post

Thank you so much for vacation mode. I'm sorry for posting about it though because I know the topic will probably dominate the forums for the next week or so but I really wanted to say something...

This thread in business topics is the only thread I could find about it: www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5812935
and the OP is right.

Taking items out of view for vacation mode eliminates "window shopping." Someone could stumble upon my store whilst on vacation and have no idea what I sell. I think item should at least be visible...BUT unpurchase-able during vacation mode, so that people can still see what we sell AND give the item hearts for when we are back.

I'm just having trouble seeing how "notify me when seller returns" would be useful if a new buyer can't see what you sell in order to determine if they'd want to be notified?

I really prefer my old method which was announcing in my shop announcement when the orders would be filled and changing my banner to say "vacation." Fellow buyers and sellers, if a seller chooses to go on vacation using the "old method" and not the new vacay option, would that irritate you when looking at their shop?

Admin, what do you think about the slight adjustment to the new, wonderful tool you've given us?

I'll continue to use the old method myself.

I agree. I will not be using vacation mode, but instead, will use notification in my shop as before.

Ok, I don't feel so alone now! I hope me not using the vacation mode when I go on vacation won't irritate anyone but I can't see how emptying my shop is benneficial.

...besides, i usually have my laptop with me even on vacation, & can shoot out a convo to buyers... everyone has been understanding. Only once did i have to cancel a sale because she needed the item before i got home... still, there were no hard feelings.

I am however going to be using the batch deactivate for items that i take to shows... that one is a winner in my book!

I have to agree. I want to come home and spend the first day packaging and mailing all the orders waiting on me. Thanks for this post. It's really settled what I need to do.

I have to agree also - I will not be using the new vacation mode feature. I was looking for a different end result, not an easier way of putting things into inactive. I was just looking for a way for folks to see my product but not be able to buy. I want to still have window shoppers!!

For a short vacation, I think the old method is best too.

I was thinking that this new vacation tool is perfect if we find ourselves in an emergency type situation and need to shut down our shops for a bit.

CaptureCape, I think your suggestion is a good one and will make the new tool more versatile.

That sums it up for me. I might have stopped too short in reading the thread where admin asked for our ideal vacation mode....but I thought (and I could be wrong) that most idea-givers made it pretty clear that they did not want their items to disappear..they just wanted them to be unavailable for purchase. I also thought the idea was given several times where people COULD purchase anyway but would be notified of the return date when the purchase would be filled. I don't know if those ideas were too complex for Etsy's system to administer or what...but the current mode is just going to make us all lose impulse buys/hearts and doesn't give lookers a reason to return.

sandyssundries no fair! I wish I still had my laptop. What a good method of keeping into contact with customers while on vacation.
