CPSIA Vintage Book Nationwide Demonstration?

What do you think?

April 18, 2009 - National Vintage Book Read-In

April 18 will be the last day of National Library Week so what better day to show our leaders that we do not intend to comply with their effective ban on children’s books than to let our kids publicly read these “dangerous” books?

What will this involve?
Take your child and his or her favorite vintage books to a park or community center near you. The demonstration will involve children touching, trading, and yes, even reading books that have been published before 1985. Juggling, blowing bubbles, picnicking, and drawing with sidewalk chalk will all be encouraged at these events. *Please note: Books at the event will not be eaten, destroyed, or sequestered!

How can you help?
Volunteer to be an organizer!

What does an organizer do?
Find a spot in your community to have the demonstration, preferably, public property. Then tell all your friends to come too! Encourage your friends to bring other friends. Also, don’t forget to call the newspaper and tell them to come take pictures! Send the photos to your Senator and Congressman! Put a video of the event on YouTube or your blog! Basically, be extremely obnoxious about publicizing the event in any way you can possibly think.

Also, if you would like to volunteer by making a cute blog about this, or have a suggestion on how to improve the event, please let me know!

Thanks!

I'm in. This makes me ill. As a young girl, the library opened me to ideas and dreams way beyond my rural existence. Many of the books were old, but very relevant. This is the only way for some children to read at all as new books are costly. Sounds like a way to dumb down the masses to me.

I share my vintage books with my grandchildren - and nothing will stop me from doing that!

I still do not understand. Are libraries actually pulling books from shelves? Has anyone seen this with their own eyes?

Here is some info about the new law and libraries:

Apparently, if libraries do discard vintage children's books, they can't even GIVE them away, because they are considered 'dangerous'. SO ridiculous.

I am not disagreeing with you, but libraries need to be putting their pre-1985 children's books into their special collections and make them only available to adults and not to be removed from the library.

There is a very fine line between a children's book pre-1985 and an adult collectible - which CPSC has said is not included under the regs. If these books are so called "hazardous" to children then to preserve the existence of these books they must then be considered adult collectibles. This probably would have to be argued by attorneys but the legal reasoning is sound. The American Library Association has to resources to do this - where small booksellers do not. Hopefully, if the insanity is not corrected by Congress this will be the path that is taken.

Keep in mind - lead is not a hazardous substance. Only lead intended for children is. You can buy and sell pure lead as long as you are selling it to adults - and actually if a ten year old walked into a sporting goods store and wanted to buy a lead fishing weight it would be sold to the kid with no question.

That all said - any public protest in this regard is appropriate at this point because the general public still does not know this law exists and the mainstream media is still ignoring it.

I think though, SADLY, that the only thing that might actually get attention is a couple of mass book burnings on the 11 o'clock news.
