Well, sometimes it is.

For example, I often see claims for "all-natural" lotions, body butters and such. Quite often that means it is made without a preservative.

But buyers, beware. Any bath & body product that is made with water (like a lotion) NEEDS a preservative! Water creates a wonderful breeding ground for all kind of "totally natural" germs, bacteria, fungus and other bad nasties. Ever see a picture of someone infected with flesh-eating bacteria? Ick.

So, what I'm getting at is that chemicals have their place. Besides, there are many preservatives out there these days that do not contain parabens or formaldehyde (which is all I'll use).

B&B makers, if you would like to know more about the different kinds of presrevatives out there and how to best use them, come to the Virtual Labs tomorrow (Monday) at 5 pm (EST). The SAFEteam is hosting part 2 of our Virtual Soap Symposium - this week's guest expert is Kelly Bloom of Southern Soapers. Everyone is welcome - buyers too. It is always good to be informed.

Sunblossoms, there really isn't any natural preservatives - at least for bath and beauty products. :)

I'm looking forward to this symposium tomorrow with Kelly. I would like to hear more about one of the newer "all natural" preservatives Geogard.

Hi Frenchy! *waves*

YouStinkSoap is right. Many people mistakenly believe that grapefruitseed extract or Vitamin E serve as preservatives, but they don't. Both are actually anti-oxidants. So, they will help stop an oil from going rancid as quickly, but they won't do anything about bacteria or the other nasties.

I suppose you're right..since there's lye in soap and such

I've also heard about soap going rancid before if it's too "all natural".
