nutmeg goes UNDER THE VEIL!

today will be my first day in my experiment of wearing full hijab and abaya.

firstly, let me say that i mean no disrespect to Muslim women in this. i have lived in an Islamic country and studied Islam and revere it greatly.
secondly,. i consider myself a post-feminist. this is not an expression of the way i believe women 'ought' to dress for any reason.

my purpose is myriad. i have been lately subject (as i mentioned in an earlier post) to unwanted and sometimes threatening attentions from men here in India. it has been quite detrimental to my going about freely, and i wish to have the option of making myself unseen. i also want to actually get the right price for things at shops on occasion - no tourist mark-up if they can only see my eyes!

on a more abstract level, i've wondered whether, for Muslim women, the veil is a sort of freedom, or a repression. i have spoke to women who hold both opinions, and am curious to see how it would feel to me. another curiosity is in the concept of existing in the world without being contextualized by my looks. i will no longer be American, have red hair, of this or that fashion - i will be a non-entity in looks, and my only presence will be through my words and actions.

i've had a beautiful outfit made up, somewhat plain but of a lovely powder blue and tastefully embellished. i will be covered head-to-foot, with a small slit for the eyes.

i plan to document my experience with this for an essay i intend to write, so will update this thread as well for those who are interested.

surely it shall be interesting all around!

love,
nutmeg

i've also explored etsy for such a getup, and am saving for these beautiful garments:

a common misconception is that the typical Islamic dress is straight black top to bottom. some ladies do wear such, but others wear gorgeously embellished garments, even those with beautiful and vibrant colours!

That sounds extremely interesting. I used to do similar types of things here in the states when I was studying Psychology and Sociology in college. I found each experience gave me new information about the human condition but also insight into myself. I would love to hear about the outcome of your experience.

<3 awww Nutmeg, you took me up on the suggestion, huh?

My favourite hijab is actually a wide silk scarf I bought at the mall- only $8 on clearance! It's dyed in deep blues to bright aqua greens, so it's very gorgeous~ It's true- actually, most Muslim dress, outside of formal occasions or very strict countries, is often quite bright and colourful! Hit up Youtube searching for 'hijab' to see what I mean! At some point, someone made a video of scans from a hijab fashion magazine- I envy how some girls can get away with lime green. ^_~

yes bebe! i was gonna mention that but didn't know if you'd want me to or not. if you've had experiences that you care to share, would you mind if i used them in my article? i'd like to get some other perspectives as well :)

love,
