| Overpriced items hurting us all? |

The word "cheap" really bothers me. I see sometimes people use that word as a way to push their product.... I like to see "inexpensive", "modest", or "economical".
Cheap sounds bad. |

Right! Because they pay for the *experience* - - its what makes a diner different from a Ritz.
Both have their place though.... __________
Definitely. And the diner, in turn, isn't crap, even placed against a Micheline. |

ArtsAfire says: I think underpricing is killing us all. I see very few overpriced things, especially in the artwork section. I mean, there are things that are in the thousands and I'm not sure Etsy is the venue for that, but for the most part, art is a steal on Etsy versus what you pay in the real world. --------------- I agree. |

Thanks guys.
I'm putting together an article and had to play devils advocate, here. The article focus is that underpricing is affecting the way the average consumer views handmade goods. I just needed some opinions on both sides of that fence and some information about pricing.
Stirring the pot is fun, though, eh? If I can quote your opinion in my article, please let me know. Not your opinions on Sculpey, though. I may get sued.
underoakstudios, sunflowerexpress, savor, ArtsAfire, DesignedByLucinda, fivelittlegems were especially helpful.
Again, sorry to get you all fired up, but it's an evil way to get people talking about something like prices. I've been selling to galleries and shops in my area for years and have never been told that I've overpriced, but I've always had to keep a close eye on underpricing.
Sadly, underpricing is one of the reasons that I don't sell (not anything but paper bracelets just to keep an account open) on Etsy. Remember when the same thing happened on eBay (before Etsy)? Handmade clothes used to go for so much more there...
Anyway, thanks again for participating!! |

Donna Kato can help anyone make something out of Sculpey, she is the Sculpey Goddess. My customers don't look for cheap, they look for the right thing and price is just part of the package. |

Alluna says: I think the formula used to be
Cost of Materials + Minumum wage x the time it took to make x 2 = Retail price
Has this changed or are there a bunch of DaVinci's out there making one of a kind pieces that are worth much more than retail?
============================
"Minimum wage" ??!?!! NOT!
How about a deal ... you help me pay my bills, and I'll settle for minimum wage! |
