Discussing the Coral Issue / Segregation of Group

Original Post
I was hoping to have a discussion here in the business topics about the Coral article and the reason it has bothered many people here in the Etsy community.
Can we try to avoid, linking to closed threads or calling out other members but just simply state the concern we might have over the said article?
I have read the article, and many of the threads that followed, but most were closed for the above reasons.
Hoping to make this a safe zone for venting feelings over the issue without getting the lock..
Can we do this? I think so.
Here is my opinion on the matter:
After reading the article it seems to me that drawing lines with art and pinpointing a select group and asking for a boycott of those items that this select group creates, really does go against the whole freedom of art and expression. NO tot mention the community spirit of Etsy. I guess for me, in the same way that saying if you use real fur (Which I do not) But I have many friends who do, in their art. If I were to ask for a boycott against their items would just be such the wrong direction in the art world.
Whatever your convictions, I think you should stand by them. On the other hand, trying to stir people into action for your own cause, especially when in regards to art, just goes against the Etsy community spirit and strongly against the whole meaning of art, which is personal expression.
I think this therefore leads to the angry response of the article.
Please join in with your thoughts, but lets try not to get this one shut down..

I think that the main thing for me is that etsy has a rule against "calling out". Is that only meant for us? It should be meant for them too. If the items follow their own TOS, they shouldn't be called out by anyone.

I was offended because:
Although I know that fabric manufacturing has a negative environmental impact, I don't want to see an article about it in the Storque.

I believe the purpose of the article was to inform Etsians that coral is not an infinitely renewable resource, that it's being overharvested and depleted.
Many people probably never gave it a second thought before. Even though it's a "mineral" or "stone" product, it comes from live animals.

I agree completely. It's sad that so much arbitrary, subjective spin was put onto it by people.

I can understand why all the jewelry makers would be offended, especially if they use coral. BUT doing and saying the right thing may not always be popular.
I do think, however, that Etsy should have banned the product site-wide before posting an article like this.

The article was not balanced and not completely accurate. It was written by an individual whose very, very, large company uses gemstones, diamonds, gold and silver which reek havoc on the environment. Not to mention the human rights concerns about blood diamonds and gem mining.
Research should be thorough, unbiased and presented by an impartial author. Not someone trying to sell her other work off etsy.

What does mean form shops with coral? Are these shops now
Less preferred than the non-coral selling shops? I read the article, but I don't recall seeing any information about died corals or limestone coral...
