Systems Administrator

Etsy is seeking a skilled systems administrator to help build and maintain our network and systems. As a member of Etsy's Operations team and reporting to the IT director, you will support a rapidly-growing, high-availability/high-traffic 24x7 web environment. This position is based in Brooklyn and will trips as necessary to our data center in northern New Jersey.

Required skills and experience:

• Experience supporting demanding 24x7 e-commerce environments, focusing on performance, availability, and scalability
• Extensive experience administering and tuning Linux-based systems
• Production experience with Nagios, Squid proxy, lightttpd/Apache, Cisco & Force10 networking hardware, Network Appliance SAN, and F5 BIG/IP load balancers
• Hands on configuration and management of BGP, OSPF, VLAN, Spanning Tree and VTP
• Experience using a variety of tools and services to monitor, test, and tune performance and availability (Gomez, Siege, etc.)
• Familiarity with Python, MySQL, PostgreSQL, enterprise search technologies a plus
• Experience with data center management, including strong knowledge of power, space, and cooling issues
• Experience with credit card gateways and PCI compliance issues
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Strong interpersonal skills. Self starter with the ability to lead teams on specific projects
• Ability to perform needs assessments and create business proposals, especially capacity planning

Position duties:

• Automated rollout and configuration management for key systems used at Etsy
• Proactive monitoring of systems and services across Etsy's business, including administration and configuration of Nagios and other tools
• Support of software engineers and their development environment and code repository (Subversion), including code deployment to production
• Performance tuning and automation for applications, systems, and network using a variety of tools
• Hands-on network security tasks, including VPNs/firewalls configuration, wireless security, and application security (working with the software engineering team)
• Configuration and management of DNS and routing
• User account management
• Hands-on management and regular review of business continuity, disaster recovery, and security systems at Etsy
• Work closely with Etsy's BizOps team in purchasing and inventory of hardware
• Participation in on-call rotation
