Belt buckles of this sort (Pafti) are an essential part of traditional Balkan costume, with the most lavish being worn for weddings.
The shape of this buckle incorporates the traditional palmette shapes with a circular medallion in the center concealing the typical hook latch. The two sides of the buckle with their winged, almost paisley shapes have been cast from heavy metal and intricately forged and tooled and then plated in a fine, highly reflective gold. The patterning is elegant and rich, with raised dots and scrollwork flourishes. On each side, dimensional flower like forms contain at their centers turquoise glass cabochons. The center medallion features a dark iron oxide red glass cabochon. Along the bottom of this medallion and continuing along the bottom of the buckle hang gold tone chains that suspend gold tone "coins" that resemble large paillettes. The effect is terrifically dramatic when one walks, the chains swaying and catching the light.
The black leather belt is quite long and could easily be shortened after adjusting to one's proper waist or hip size.
