About the sheep: These sheep represent some of the 18th century livestock at the Ingles Ferry Living History site. Ingles Ferry, located in Radford, VA, is the home place of Mary Draper Ingles, heroine of the book “Follow the River” by James Thom. Mary was captured by the Shawnee Indians in 1755, taken to Ohio, escaped, and returned to Virginia. In the 1760s, she and her husband, William, settled at the Ingles Ferry site. The land has remained in the family and has always remained a working farm.
For one weekend per month from April through October, the Ingles Ferry site is opened to the public at no charge. Costumed interpreters demonstrate sheep shearing, flax culture and processing, spinning, militia musters and other various activities. The Hog Island sheep are always present for the public to view.
You can read more about where the sheep are raised at http://www.inglesferry.com/.
