This is a very rare and exceptional gilded filigree upper arm cuff or armlet made by Kenneth Lane in the late 1960s to early 1970s. The design of this cuff is quite unusual, unlike anything we have seen before.
The color of this piece is a rosy gold that looks uniquely beautiful in different lighting situations. The cuff aspect of this piece is comprised of a malleable metal that fits nicely around the upper arm. The metal is smooth inside and is treated with a brushed texture on the visible side. On top of this cuff is an elaborate structure comprised of a large central medallion flanked by two golden wings. The medallion depicts two young knights or courtly princes on either side of a heraldic shield or family crest with a plumed armor helmet at the top. The medallion features a scrollwork surround that gives the medallion the look of a regal shield. The wings that emerge from this shield are beautifully detailed with sweeping flourishes and pierced latticework that is laced with vining flowers. When you look very closely at these wings, you can see figures of shepherds and musicians accompanied by hunting dogs. The wings appear carved and remind us of the gilded boiserie of fine French furniture.
The arm cuff is signed "Kenneth Lane" in an oval cartouche on the reverse.
This piece was very possibly made as a custom piece for an important client or as a limited edition that was most likely sold exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue due to the particular signature.
