Vintage grey/black slate bookends made by Harpswell House. Would make a fabulous addition to any library. Shell insignia engraved on face of bookends. Bookend measures 5 inches wide by 7 inches tall; the slate is 7/8 inches thick. This grey/black slate is from a quarry in eastern Pennsylvania. Stamped on bottom Harpswell House 300 million year old slate.
Slate is formed from prehistoric mud 300 to 500 million years ago. Under great pressure it solidified into the stone called slate.
Bookends are very heavy, each bookend weighs 3 1/2 pounds!
