In the early 20's there were 5 versions of the sunwatches manufactured by The Sunwatch Manufacturing Company, New York, U.S.A. Two for the American market, one for the Australian/New Zealand market, one for the British market and one for the Canadian market.
This particular one is made for the American market in 1921. On the bottom of the face plate is marked PATENTED APR.20.1920., and PATENTED MAY 10.1921.
The Sunwatch is enclosed in a brass case with a push-button closure. The sundial brass base plate has 3 scales for telling time in 3 places with different latitudes. Inside of the lid is alphabetical list of 42 cities in the USA (from Atlanta, GA. to Wichita, KAN.) with their respective degrees latitude, longitude and clock time in minutes to add or subtract from sun time. The brass dial is fitted into a brass base plate, to be pulled out when needed. The various latitudes are etched into the base of the dial for easy use (see pic 5). Also there is a 3/4" diameter compass marked Made in France.
The sunwatch case measures 3" x 2" x 3/8".
The sunwatch case hes fabulous patina and there are no dings or dents. Hinged lid with working push-button closure opens and closes the case nicely. The letters and numbers are clear and readable.
Considering the age (90 years old), the sunwatch is in very good antique condition with minor surface wear consistent with the age.
