This one is going be very hard to part with as it instantly became a favorite. One of the oldest and most beautiful Ive offered here on Etsy.
Circa 1860-1880 and fit for a collection. Its the most wonderful shade of true pink(rose) gold, the shade we look for.Not brassy but true rose.
Its a book locket as you can see,the first detail to make it special. It has a puffed shape so it has some room inside. It sports a raised shield on its face surrounded by the most amazing faceted texture. In the photos I was saddened to see that it looks like plain flat swirls. In reality it sparkles like diamond faceting. It looks like a web of silken threads of gold.Truly bright and sparkly.
Etched corners and border so that it looks like a real book. The script is intricate. So intricate that its hard to make out. What cold be a T or an S or a G followed by a C.ALl done by hand.My guess is no one would make these out so claim them as your own initials or love it for what it is.
Looks european in design.
Looks like gold,no peeking or brassing.Could be,I havent and wont be testing it.If it isnt,it is very thick highly quality gold shell(known as rolled or gold fill).Tons of wear and life left to live.
Its lined in silver which you will find was very, very common in these older lockets especially if it is gold.Silver is harder than gold so the purpose was to reinforce the locket and protect it from dings, dents and wear. The result is a structurally sound, hardy piece.
Nice thick generous bail. 1 3/8" x 7/8.
Nice tight hinge and closes securely with a distinct snap.Wonderful, really outstanding luster and shine- even on the inside rims.
It will make the perfect every day locket and if you're in the market for an old one you have found it.Beautiful, unique locket in beautiful condition, one that is unmistakenably antique.1000% better than the photos.
This is one I wont mind holding on to and "babysitting" for awhile!
