This work explores themes of love and loss mixed into a poetry of longing. Lines and crisscrossed stitch like marks create the feeling of mending a broken heart, of journeys across an imaginary map of the night, of static radio voices traveling through the dark, and of a crack in the surface of the Earth. Through broken patterns and faint, handwritten words, A Manual for Living suggests fragments of buried memory surging to the surface. In a time of email and text messages, the handwriting offers a type of forgotten intimacy. Specific phrases reveal secrets, inviting the viewer to create a mythology about the artist or themselves.
This work is minimalist in nature, with a near-monochromatic palette comprised of various tones of dark charcoal, translucent shades of blue, red, rust, and the occasional flash of green. Better known for my richly colored mixed media paintings on paper and canvas, A Manual for Living has provided me a sense of freedom and exploration and has inspired a new series of paintings.
This body of work was the first in my White Series and has inspired and was the starting point for most everything that I have produced in the last two years. The original Manual for Living was part of my solo exhibition, Falling into Sound in 2010. The original pieces are 12x9” works on paper and will never be sold individually. So, I am pleased to present these affordable limited edition prints of this rare and sought after work. These prints will be sold exclusively through Etsy.
From a set of 50 prints, each of these professionally-printed reproductions have been signed and hand numbered on the front. The artwork is 6.5x4.5” with the paper size being 5x7" making them ideal for displaying in any off-the-shelf frame.
