Today we are presenting another exquisite Christening gown....this one too is French
This gown is truly something exceptional for its elegance of design using magnificent lace of Irish crochet style to give this gown an almost ethereal quality. The fabric is a very fine cotton batiste which the long ago designer of this gown has beautifully combined with the lace. This is truly the height of fine French hand sewing from the 'belle epoque' era aroung the turn of the last century.
The bodice, both back and front, and the little puffy sleeves have been formed by bands of lace carefully hand sewn to panels of fabric which have been embellished with the tiniest possible pin-tucks and hand embroidery in a zig-zag pattern. There are sweet little sleeves also finished in a tiny ruffle of Valenciennes lace as is the neckline. The back closes with little mother-of-pearl buttons and is as beautifully finished as is the front.
The skirt is a glorious confection beginning with deeper tucks just below the raised waist. Then the maker of this exquiste gown has inserted bands of lace down the front of the gown and in deep zig-zags both back and front... and finally all around the entire skirt to stunning effect. The skirt is finished with a deep ruffle with more tiny pin-tucks...hundreds in fact!...above a ruffle of the most gorgeous and delicate lacel
I have been quietly excited for several weeks about presenting this gown in our shop, but first I had to carefully soak it and gently wash it several times as it was sadly very yellowed with age. At last it has emerged beautifully white, fresh and clean. It is a great pleasure to revive these 'sleeping beauties' but this one was rather something of an extra challenge.
Again I want to repeat that this gown has been entirely handsewn using the finest materials...this kind of needlework is rare indeed these days, but this is an stunning example of the finest work from long ago. Also I'd like to add that gowns like this don't grow on trees. We must hunt dilligently , and we find a gown of comparable quality perhaps 5 or 6 times a year...and when we do we generally must pay a premium for them...but we determined when we began our business to try to present the highest quality possible....this gown is an example of that. We know that it a costly thing...but it also a Rare thing of great beauty and workmanship...a fine antique work of art in its own right.
This gown measures 19 inches around at the raised waist and at the underarms. It measures 37 inches from the shoulder to the hem and a magnificent full 125 inches around at the hem giving this gown a beautiful and graceful sweeping drap when baby is carried to the altar. Because we cannot assign sizes to these vintage items, please check your measurements carefully. We can say that we believe this gown would fit a baby of up to about 12 months and possibly a few months beyond according to body type.
As always we suggest, and in this case would rather insist, that if this gown is to be used for a Christening that it have a petticoat made to wear under it to give protection and support. As well a petticoat gives elegance and body to the gown showing it to best advantage. To make a petticoat for this type of gown would be a truly simple matter for any reasonably competant seamstress...perhaps a doting grandmother!
Finally this gown, is in excellent condition, clean and I have found no holes or repairs which is also exceptional for a gown this age. You will likely fine a few tiny breaks in the lace here and there but there is nothing serious or evident because of the lavishness of the lace.
This lovely and truly unusual French Christening gown will come to you freshly hand laundered using fine French hypoallergenic soap and will be ironed, fresh, clean,, and ready to use.
All in all this is an exceptionally fine and elegant French Christening gown, a magnificent creation for the baptism of a lovely, and much loved, baby and it will be treasured for generations to come as a fine family heirloom.
