You want to know the real reason I don't make more earrings? I hate having to make two of something. It's that hard for me. But sometimes I get around that by making two earrings that are similar, rather than identical, like the very wabi sabi drops in these earrings.
I am always trying to get to a more primordial in feeling in my work, in my forms, and often I will arrive at a new element just by playing with the metal clay to see what it will do, rather than trying to impose a design upon it. These forms are very evocative for me, impressed with the pattern of a fossil ammonite shell and rolled around a sterling ear wire. I used both sides of the ammonite pattern to get mirror-image impressions, after which they were fired, oxidized to an ancient patina, and hand-finished.
Copper patina takes me several passes to get it to the point where I like it, because what I want these to look like is the warm glow of an old penny...something that only time can impart. But hopefully I've made a good start. The 20 gauge sterling wires have been threaded through the rolled forms and a drawn bead on each end anchors them securely in place.
Artifacts out of the desert dreamtime, born of the rough stone and harsh climate of the drylands, evoking a vast timescape of the earth...and perhaps reminding us of a deeper and more expansive view in our hectic, 21st century lives.
Size: The larger earring is 65mm x 11mm; the smaller is 62mm x 10.
Care: None needed. Wash in cool water and dry with a soft cloth. Allow the patina to deepen over time.
Your Primordial earrings will arrive beautifully giftwrapped in a hand-decorated pillow box, along with a handwritten description of the piece.
