Woodpeckers have zygodactyl feet, which consist of four toes, the first and fourth facing forward and the second and third facing rear. This toe arrangement is perfect for grasping rough textures such as tree bark. Woodpeckers can walk right up a tree when foraging for food. In addition to powerful claws, woodpeckers have short strong legs. Their tails are rigid and act as a support along with their feet and legs.
