I carved the cherry blossom design into the surface of this coaster when the clay was dry enough to not distort but still wet enough to easily and cleanly carve. When applying glaze, I first fill the carved branches with a black wax resist and the carved Cherry Blossoms and leaves with the various glazes. After waxing the carved areas, the inside and outside surfaces are glazed by dipping the piece into the turquoise green glaze.
2" (5 cm) in height, 6" (15.2 cm) in diameter.
This piece was handmade on a potter's wheel out of stoneware and fired to over 2300 degrees F.
