Why We Love It:
These pieces by Paul McCobb are some of the most coveted of modern design and also highlight the beginnings of modular furniture featuring bases which could be manipulated and paired with various drawers and cabinets. We love the piano black lacquer finish and lovely outward taper to the legs along with the grass cloth sliding doors. This piece would be excellent as a bar or record cabinet.
Paul McCobb was perhaps one of the most prolific industrial designers of the 1950’s and 60’s. With no formal training, he set up his own firm in 1945 and capitalized on the huge post-war need for simple, affordable, and stylish furniture by young, future-oriented, and growing families. His pieces are some of the first to take on a modular form and were inexpensive, flexible, and practical. These pieces are from his Planner Group line, which was produced from 1950-1964.
