Buckeye Burl is a root burl of the Horse Chestnut tree (Aesculus californica). It grows primarily in the mountains of Northern California. The natural color of the burl is a dull white. Add a turquoise dye and it is a whole different ball game. Not only is the color vibrant, but the dye brings the eye burl and curl to life. The figure absorbs the dye differently, creating a powerful two tone look. This bowl is a good example of this. This piece also has some natural voids which add to the drama.
The bowl is 3 inches tall and 8 inches wide (at the widest point). The piece was sanded to 1500 grit, buffed with finishing compounds, and finished with multiple coats of polyurethane. The piece is numbered, signed, and dated by the artist.
