WILLIAM LEWIS GILBERT BEGAN A LIFE LONG CAREER IN THE CLOCK MAKING BUSINESS WHEN HE PURCHASED A CLOCK SHOP WITH HIS BROTHER-IN -LAW GEORGE MARSH, IN DECEMBER OF 1828 THE FIRM OF MARSH GILBERT & COMPANY WAS ACTIVE IN BRISTOL AND FARMINGTON CON. UNTIL ABOUT 1834 WHEN IT MOVED TO DAYTON OHIO AND BEGAN MARKETING WOOD CLOCKS. RETURNING TO BRISTOL ABOUT 1835 GILBERT FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH JOHN BIRGE IN THE FIRM BIRGE , GILBERT & COMPANY MARKETED EMPIRE CASED SHELF CLOCKS WITH JOSEPH IVES PATENT MOVEMENTS. THE FIRM WAS DISSOLVED ABOUT 1837 WHEN GILBERT WENT INTO PARTNERSHIP WITH CHAUNCEY AND NOBLE JEROME AND ZELOTAS GRANT IN 1839 AS JEROME GRANT GILBERT & COMPANY MANUFACTURED JEROMES BRASS MOVEMENT CLOCKS.
