In one way or another, my work is always about a link to the spirit of the desert, but in this case I have rubbed desert clay directly into the pieces. The clay was found on public lands in northwestern New Mexico; eight different hues of red were collected from the strata of one hillside. I used the most vibrant of them, a terra-cotta, for these earrings.
Two rough, eroded drops of steel metal clay have been imprinted with trilobite fossils and my own fingerprints. These were kiln-fired and lightly burnished, then saturated with a mixture of beeswax and the red clay which was rubbed in by hand. As the steel is quite porous after firing, it absorbed the wax beautifully. I applied a final protective coat of Renaissance Wax to seal them.
The wires are 20g sterling, hammered on an old section of railroad track from the abandoned mines in Madrid, New Mexico.
Wear these and hear the desert hills whisper in your ear....
Size: 68mm long x 29mm wide.
Care: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to clean. Do not use polish on the steel.
Your Red Clay Fossil earrings will arrive beautifully giftwrapped in a hand-decorated pillow box, along with a handwritten description.
