My Country Doves are handmade from white stoneware clay and fired many times to achieve the look of vintage painted cast iron. The normal firing times for clay is twice; once to fire greenware (a dried clay form) to bisque so the glaze will adhere to the form, and a second firing for the glaze and clay to mature. Country Doves were fired five times with intervals of overlay glaze painting, rubbing, sanding and scoring. I took all of those years that achieve the natural vintage cast iron aging and condensed them into a month of handmade aging. It was so much fun!
Country Doves are a set of two doves that each rest atop their own handmade pedestal. The doves are hand sculpted rough and rustic with worn wing and tail feather edges and worn head and beak edges. One dove sits atop a plain pedestal and the other dove rests on a bed of cornflowers with a larger cornflower at the base.
Each Country Dove stands roughly 9-3/4 inches tall on a 3 inch wide, circular pedestal. The floral Country Dove’s overall width, including the base flower and tail is 6-1/2 inches wide and the other is 6 inches wide. They are multi-layer glazed in a smooth and velvety matte black, cornflower blue and crisp white. The pedestal is hollow, but the clay thickness of the pedestal is 3/8 inch thick making the doves very solid, sturdy and somewhat heavy to withstand those windy days on the farm.
Country Doves are the perfect home accent and table centerpiece for relaxed, soft country or understated rustic decor. They also make a really special gift keepsake, wedding gift and family heirloom to pass down to future generations.
