This is a wonderful old ring from the 1920's or a bit earlier....crafted by the well known Belais Brothers of NYC. They are famous for their fine filigree rings and for patenting one of the first white gold alloys in 1917....very collectible and perfect for a special engagement ring....with wonderful fiery old cut diamonds...
Finely crafted of solid 18k white gold, this ring features three beautiful, high quality old cut diamonds. The center stone is an old European cut...extremely bright, super clean and fiery. It measures approximately 4.2 mm and is estimated to be approximately .28 - .30 carats. I would judge the color to be G in the near-colorless range and it is super clean, even under my loupe. There is one chip right at one of the six prongs that can only be seen under magnification....and that prong should be retipped as it is no longer holding the stone securely. Having it retipped will probably cover the small chip, though again, it can't be seen by the naked eye. The other tips show some wear and I would recommend having them all touched up to keep this fiery old diamond safe. It's a really wonderful stone and was hard for me to capture well in my photos. Belais always used very high quality stones in their pieces....and these are all original to the ring!
The diamond's setting is very pretty...it's six sided and still has it's original milgrain detailing. On each shoulder is another old hand cut diamond set into lovely tear drop shaped settings. Each diamond is approximately 2 mm in diameter, with a very chunky cut, small elevated table and open culet. They are also great quality....clean, fiery and bright, to match the quality of the center stone.
More period detailing extends down the shoulders, and the undergallery has wonderful pierced filigree work in very nice condition. There is some wear to the front and back side of the undergallery where this ring was worn with guard bands...but it really just softens the lower area....the top areas are still beautiful with milgrain work. Under high magnification I see what might be one old repair...it's a very faint, fine line that does not go through the gold...but is just on the surface and is not seen by the naked eye. It does not affect the structural integrity of the ring, but I wanted to mention it for accuracy.
The band is slender by style, but still very strong and does not show any indications of having been sized. It is still marked "Belais 18K" on the inside of the band. The total weight is 1.75 grams.
Currently just over a size 6.25, this ring could be sized within reason by a good jeweler who is experienced in working with older jewelry. ** Please read my policies for more information regarding sizing, or feel free to convo me to discuss it or to obtain a quote from my trusted jeweler.
