“Prosit” means “Cheers!” Here is a beautifully hand painted Delft blue mug with the word “Prosit” painted on it. It was made in 1965 in Delft, Holland, at the only remaining factory of the original 32+ earthenware factories established in Delft in the 17th century. “De Porceleyne Fles” (the Porcelain Jar) was founded in 1653, and continues in existence today. It was granted the prefix “Royal” (“Koninklijke”) in 1919 in appreciation for its efforts in maintaining the success of Delft’s porcelain industry over so many years.

This vintage mug has all the correct markings from the factory: the jar, the initials JT (for Joost Thooft, who bought the factory in 1876) and the city’s name, Delft. Below that there are three codes. To the left are the initials of the painter (JBR). To the right is the year code: CJ stands for 1965. Under these is an internal code for the piece. This mug’s code is 1013.

The word “Prosit” is nicely painted on the mug to the left of the handle, and is surrounded by blue flowers, leaves, and dots. All the painting was done by hand. The design is in light and dark blue, and the background is slightly grayish – not a bright white. It measures 4.5 inches (11.3 cm) high, 3 and 5/8 inches (9.2 cm) across the base, 3 and 1/8 inches (8cm) across the top, and about 5.5 inches (14 cm) wide, including the handle. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or stains – perfect for either a Delft or mug collection!
