Blue Enamel Pendant - Enamel Necklace - Enamel Fancy Bezel Necklace - Turquoise Blue and Brown Enamel and Sterling Silver - Edwardian Design

This is a complex enameled piece that conveys an old fashioned Edwardian sensibility.
I started by finding a fabulously ornate Edwardian pattern and transferred it to a piece of copper that was then photo-etched. This "cut" the pattern into the metal.

I then hand cut a plexiglass die to press out this oval domed form as you see it. Hand cutting a die form is a very slow laborious process. It was necessary though, I didn't want to shape this with a hammer- it would have destroyed the intricate etched pattern in the shaping process.
Once the copper was etched and formed, the fun can begin....

This enameling process is called champleve. Enamel is the application of powdered glass that is fired onto the metal. It is permanent and not paint, resin, or some surface coating. It is glass fused to metal. The deeply etched parts were carefully wet packed with deep brown umber enamel and fired. Layers of soft fusing clear enamel and more brown were added and fired. Finally I added a vibrant turquoise blue in the areas around the brown etched areas. I used a soft fusing flux so that areas of clear would deliberately "break through" the blue to add depth and mystery. The piece was then stoned and matted by hand.

The setting is also entirely hand made by me of sterling silver raw materials. I think it complements the enamel very nicely. The chain is solid sterling silver and 16 inches long. The style or length of the chain can be changed to suit you.

All the silver was oxidized black and then some of it removed so you can see all the details. It looks amazing on!
