The cup was thrown on a wheel. Black clay and white clay were painted on the surface of the leather hard clay, then scraped away in a technique known as sgraffito. After the initial bisque firing, the birds and beach were carefully painted with a wax resist, and the mug dipped in Blue Wheat glaze. The final, high fire effect is unglazed birds and beach, against a shiny blue background of water. The interior is also glazed blue, as is the handle. The type of clay used is high in sand content, giving the appearance of a sandy beach in warm shades of tan, contrasting with the shiny, glazed water. .
This is Cone 10, high fire stoneware. The Blue Wheat glaze is lead free, and food safe.
Capacity is about 17 ounces, or slightly more if filled to the rim. Height is about 4 3/4", and width at the rim is about 4 3/8", not including the handle. Very nice weight, sturdy, but not heavy or clunky in the least.
I have included several photos, with closeups intended to show the raised, carved surfaces.
Hand washing is recommended for all handmade ceramics, but this is also suitable for the dishwasher and microwave.
