Everything used to make this piece is recycled: The dark blue YKK zipper is vintage, the lining is a fabric wall calendar from 1974, and the zipper pull is a piece of leather scrap.
The main fabric used, vintage ticking fabric or "toile à matelas," is a sturdy cotton that was used extensively in France in the past to make mattresses. It is now quite fashionable in France, used by many sewers to make bags and lavender sachets, but many of them look for pieces in almost-pristine condition. Lengths that have too many holes or that have stains are usually ignored. And yet those pieces to me are somehow more interesting than their fresher counterparts. They have lived - if we can apply the term to inanimate objects - and are not afraid to show it. These are what I have chosen to reclaim.
The idea for my Reclaimed pieces came from seeing how my mother-in-law meticulously mended her children's clothes. Jeans were patched and re-patched at the knees. Holes in shirts were carefully camouflaged with fabric of similar print. It spoke to me of love, frugality, and a natural environmental awareness.
It measures 10.7 x 48 inches or 27 x 19 cm.
