Time has been kind to this impressive mirror, as there are few signs of wear. Interestingly, SYROCO, (SYRacuse Ornamental COmpany) originated in the 1890’s as an embellishment firm, producing ornamental wood carvings for furniture and interiors of fashionable homes. As the popularity of their wares grew, a molding technique was developed where SYROCO could create perfect replicas of their original carvings. The recipe of wood flour, waxes, and resins combined with compression molding created an inexpensive, but high quality product. In the 1960’s, the injection molded plastic technique was used, yet SYROCO continued to produce items with the previously mentioned technique. I believe this mirror made it’s debut in the 1960’s, yet can’t state for sure the material it’s made from. The frame is very sturdy, and feels more substantial than just plastic. Either way, this mirror is a fine example of SYROCO’s talent for producing ornate items.
