For me, this medieval city of canals and cafes
has always been on my very short list...
It could be the light, and the shadows, still the same ones
which captured Rembrandt when he painted here.
Or the eclectic, cannabis infused vibe of the cafes,
hung in tattered tapestries and temple lanterns...
Or even the houseboats, because after reading the erotica of Anais Nin,
you can never walk past one again, without listening for amorous sounds
amid the creaking of the bow lines...
The flowers spilling over old stones into canals...
the aroma of airy pastries weaving thru dappled shade...
The smiles on the faces of multiculti bike commuters...
And the music of the world that surrounds you everywhere...
All of these make the experience of AMSTERDAM
Something worth packing a reversible tote bag and venturing out to glean.
This amazing upholstery cloth caught my eye in a thrift store.
I knew immediately it was dense enough to be reversible, and equally amazing on either side. I knew that the hours i spent unraveling the wide borders with a pin and tiny scissors, would produce a loveable shaggy dog fringe you would want to fondle.
I knew if I put large patch pockets back to back on each side, the effect when you reversed it would be one outside and one inside pocket for your iPad, and one across from it for your cell and wallet and keys.
And yet, knowing all that, I could not have guessed how strong and rich and old world it would look and feel when it was a fait accompli.
Or how much I would want to keep it for myself!
But alas, my roads are all about family this season, so it would not be fair of me to keep this beauty tethered.
So here is what I would suggest, if you have a ticket to somewhere ancient and lush in your current handbag, adopt this tote now, and take her along wherever your gypsy boots take you..
And if you and she do find your way to AMSTERDAM,
when the weather is cold, use the fringey tapestry side
as a hand warmer for your soul...
But if you arrive when the tulips are in bloom,
Flip it around and shift into purple and saffron mode!
Either way, AMSTERDAM will be your friend for life.
